ter better citizenship among its

Don Shea, coach of the Marist football team in Atlanta, has been
busily engaged as the Assistant Executive Secretary of the Coaches
All-America Game to be played at Atlanta Stadium Saturday night
at 9; 30. Mr. and Mrs. Shea are now the parents of a baby girl,
Donna.. .It seems as though school was out for the summer and now
it is a reality that a little more than a month before Newton Ram
Coach Wilbur Fisher will be calling for his football candidates to
report to Sharp Field.
Bubba Hill hurled a two-hit shutout against the Covington Fal
cons of the Newton Senior League. Hill, a member of the Cov
ington Rebels, is also a basketball player on Coach Ronald Brad
ley’s cage team...local baseball team may be entered in the Stan
Musial League in Atlanta next season. Olin Allen has organized
a team this summer and in a recent game at Monticello, Doug
Bledsoe hurled the team to a 20-0, five-inning victory. “Be
wiser than other people if you can, but do not tell them so.” —
Lord Chesterfield.
Among Billy Crowell’s many souvenirs at his Porterdale Golf
Course clubhouse is a tennis racket that once belonged to the great
Jack Kramer, famous Davis Cupper. . .An extreme rarity on local
Little League baseball could happen this year as all three Porterdale
teams could win their league titles. Bibb sponsors teams in the
Minor, Major and Senior loops.. .Will Robertson, a member of the
old Nashville Vols baseball team back in the 1890’s, died recently
at age 99 in Shelbyville, Tenn. He was the grandfather of Mrs. James
E. Hastings of Capes Drive, Covington.
Miss Louise Fowler has returned home from atrip to several Eu
ropean countries. Last week she saw the Wimbledon Tennis matches
in England. . .It is hard to tell which sport--tennis or golf--is mos*
popular now with the youngsters of our state. Each is enjoying ex
treme popularity now as more and more boys and girls are taking up
their favorite game... Newton Little League all-star managers have
been named for the teams since the close of the season last week.
L. C. Gordon of Porterdale is the Major LL star skipper and Bob
Hunter of the Covington Rebels is the manager of the Senior League
stars.
Little Joe’s of Columbus will serve as host for the Georgia State
Softball Tournament at Columbus, starting on August 17.. .Jim Gain
er is fast on his way to becoming a three-letter varsity performer for
Newton High. He takes part in basketball, baseball and tennis and
could be a varsity performer in all three next year.. .Atlanta Chiefs
are leading the attendance race among the National Professional
League teams.
