My, Oh Me! We spent four
days on Jekyll Island! Reason:
The 81st Annual Convention of
the Georgia Press Association!
Folks, we just want ’ter tell
you, there is nothing like a Ge
orgia Precs Association meet=-
ing! You'’d think after 81 years
these children would grow up!
All we can say is, they let their
hair down, and they do have a
good time,
For several years they, at
night, about 11 p. m, traip=
se miles up the beach to see
those huge Sea Turtles come in,
To my knowledge they have never
seen one yet, They only come
in, late at night, climb up on
the sand off the beach, dig a huge
hole and lay their eggs init., ..
then they scamper off to sea,
leaving the hatching to the sun,
When the babes are hatched out
they scamper across the sand
to the water and BING! BANG!
When they hit that water you
never see them again until, like
Mamma, they hike out there to
lay their eggs and add to the
Turtle Population,
This year, on Sunday morning,
when we were to come home,
I walked down to the beach for
the first time, There I found
our newly elected State G,P,A,
President, Louis Harris, of Au=-
gusta, He had been on a run of
about a mile or so down the
beach and back! No wonder he
looks trim and ‘‘fit as a fiddle,”
He says he runs around the city
block, in which he lives in Au
gusta, several times before bed~
time, Now you fat folks, start
this and you will slender up!
Louis told me he found where a

The entire judges’ comments
in the Community Service cate=

““The judges were tremen=
dously pleased and impressed
with the great number of entries
in the category by a number of
Georgia weeklies, the publisher
and/or editor of which obviously
have a clear understanding of a
newspaper’s role in serving its
community,
‘“The Fayette County News is
commended for its outstanding
continuing community service
program and in particular, for
its role in establishing a county
wide water system, a chamber
of commerce, teacher salary su

restoration of an historic court=
house, In each of the projects
the Fayette County News demon=

contemporary standards of
good and progressive com=

concern for the future of pro=-

Particularly outstanding was the
News’ program to improve the
educational system of Newton
County which included local su=
pplements for teachers’ salaries
which required tax referendum,
an unpopular subject to be sure,
The program is sure to have
many lasting effects not yet de=

efforts to completely revamp the
method of naming the school bo=
ard and the superintendent, the
community service rendered by
The Covington News in our opi=

entries submitted, deserves this
honor since this service is inthe
best traditions of newspaper
journalism standards of com=

‘““For the considerable ac=-

state park to be planned for
his county, the editer of The

third place,
‘‘Honorable mention is due The

impressed with the efforts of
The Albany Journal in getting a
humane society established at Al=

‘“A Special Citation to The
Vienna News., In reading the
Vienna News the judges were
instilled with a very keen de=-

a marvelous concept which in
spite of its attributes of inter=-
national good will, which she only
modestly acknowledges, she
made the entire United States
and Vietnam and conceivably ot=
her areas, her community in
performing an unusual service
of honoring America’s fighting
men in Vietnam, The project
obviously had its local impact
because the local response was
somewhat overwhelming; For
her service to her ‘immediate
community of Dooly County and
for the good will created across
the country and in a far-flung
corner of Asia, for Dooly Coun=
ty and the State of Georgia, wh
ich must be credited to news=

single out The Vienna News for
a special citation,

to be above average in quality
