My 4-H Experiences Cover
8 Years of Club Activity
By Barney Ruth Brown
I am a Senior In the R. L.
Cousins 4-H Club, and have been
a member for eight years. My
first project was recreation and I
gave a demonstration on soap
carving. Being my first project
attending county and district eli
minations I was very nervous.
I didn’t know what I was really
doing and what I was going for.
After my first experiences I got
a better understanding of it.
My second year was a little
embarasslng. My project was

foods and nutrition and food pre
servation. I gave a demonstrat
ion on freezing strawberries and
I did very well at the local meet
ings and at the county elimination
—but for the district, I guess it
wasn’t my day. As the judges
and my mother watched as I was
preparing the strawberries for
freezing, when I began to place
the berries in the container I
realized I hadn’t even washed
them! One of the judges asked
me had I forgotten something and
I still couldn’t think of what I
had forgotten until she said, “Is
it necessary to wash them first
before putting them into the con
tainer?” I was so embarrassed
that I quickly prepared the ber
ries and wishing my demonstrat
ion was over, but after I found out
I had won, my agent, mother, and
myself had a good laugh about the
berries.
The third year I had sewing.
I made a neck scarf and the only
one participating that had only
one item at the district. I re
ceived second place.
My fourth year was clothing.
The first time I had ever made a
skirt and blouse for county eli
minations and I modeled them to
win. At district I had one com
petitor. I thought I would do
like I did at the county, but
as the girl ahead of me told
the judges her procedures for
making her garment I gathered
all my thoughts together. I was
very nervous because I wasn’t
expecting to say anything. When
my turn came I let my mind
guide me, I gave my procedures
and all. I think I was a little
better than I thought I would
do, but I won first place. I told
my agent about how I almost
backed out of giving my demon
stration. My mother had told
me you never know what you can
do until you try. I didn’t think
I could.
During the summer months I
attended the Dublin 4-H Center.
I enjoyed myself very much. The
classes we had were interesting.
I learned new experiences, met
new friends and gathered quite
a lot. I participated In the ta
lent program 3 years, one was
interpretative reading, playing
a solo on the piano, doing a gr
oup song and dance. I attended
this camp for six years.
In the eighth grade my pro
ject was foods and nutrition. I
gave a demonstration on bread
making. I could never get my
biscuits to turn out right, the
first time I made some they were
so awful that I could not eat
any of them. At the district
I made my dough up and placed
the biscuits in the oven and when
time came for me to take them

out I was afraid they would be
hard and dry. I didn’t open the
oven so my agent grabbed a pad
and took them out. . .they were
the best biscuits I had made so
far. I won first place. I was
glad after telling my parents
they didn’t believe me they were
so surprised and even more ex
cited than I was.
1964-65 my project was food
preservation. I gave practice
demonstrations, helped my mot
her at home In freezing foods.
I was very nervous at the dis
trict because of so much com
petition, but still I won. I was
very thrilled and proud to go
to the state in Dublin. I lost,
but I feel I gained something
from this. I watched others as
they conducted their demonstra
tions. Although I lost, I didn’t
quit trying.
My seventh year my project
was Teen-Fare. I didn’t under
stand my project as well as I
should have at the county eli
mination I prepared a meat loaf
and made a table arrangement.
I attended Rock Eagle for the
district competition and had more
competition than I anticipated.
After arriving at the L. P. Gas
Building, I nervously prepared
my dish and arranged the table
setting, I did not win, but I will
not give up trying.
Through the years I have at
tended various 4-H meetings with
my agent and fellow 4-H mem
bers. I attended record book
clinics, local meetings, and my
mother, being a member of the
home economics club, I have
attended some of their work
shops and other meetings. I par
ticipated in the county dress re
vue, placed many exhibits in the
county fair, and have won first
place on most of my exhibits. I
have participated in many pro
grams for 4-H and with the ex
periences I have had I help youn
ger 4—H’ers with their projects
and record books. Fve written
numerous news articles for local
newspapers, taken 4-H pictures
of 4-H’ers giving their demon
stration and helped my agent.
This year I have again choosen
Teen-Fare. I will try to the best
of my ability to Improve my de
monstration. I have gained much
from having this project. Fve
planned and prepared many meals
