। Trees!!! Trees!!! Trees!!!
By Carol Thomas
• How would you like to spend
a whole week learning about
trees? You might think that
this is a simply horrible sug
gestion! But, really, it’s not
bad. I should know since I
have had this experience.
During July, 1966, I was a
warded a scholarship to attend
the North Georgia Forestry Camp
at Camp Wahsega, Dahlonega,
Georgia. As most of you know,
Camp Wahsega is a 4-H Camp;
thus 4-H’ers were swarming a
round about as bad as the mos
quitoes!
The Extension Headquarters in
Athens is well supplied with men
educated in Forestry; such as
Ted Walker and Nelson Bright
well. After a week of hear
ing these men expound on trees,
they even began to resemble
trees!
You might think a tree is just
a simple form of vegetation.
Believe me, you are very wrong.
How do words like photosynthe
sis, dextrose, cambium, and pith
strike you? These are only a
few of the foreign terms used.
During the week I learned these
words referred to many varied
phases of Forestry. Part of
them named parts of the tree,
others named processes and
functions of the tree, and still
others referred to products pro
duced by the tree.
Besides learning about what
the tree itself is and does, we
learned many things about mea
suring, marketing, thinning, and
grading the wood of these trees.
Did you know all wood is not
the same quality and that you can
be cheated selling wood just as
well as you can when buying

clothes or a new car?
We also learned the many dis
eases of the tree, most of them
being either bugs or blights.
Many of these have very com
plicated cures.
As most of you know one of
the most damaging processes to
a tree is FIRE!! You have heard
Smokey Bear telling you to pre
vent forest fires, but have you
really ever taken him to heart?
Each day many new things are
being produced from trees. We
have found ways to eat, drink,
wear, and even write on paper.
After this account you might
think I’m very educated on trees.
Yes, I’m “an educated fool”.
Much of this information did
astound me, but it helped me to
appreciate our trees more. I
wish each of you could attend
a camp such as this, then maybe
our trees would have more re
spect.
