Rams Sparkled In Victories Over Winder And South Hall
Gainesville And Druid Hills To
Visit Covington Friday-Saturday

The Newton County Rams played their best back-to-back games
in many years last weekend as the NCHS five downed the Winder-
Barrow quint Friday 90-54, and South Hall Saturday 79-57 at South
Hall. The team set a school record in the win over Winder by hitting
30 of 50 field goal attempts for a 60% mark. The previous record
was against Rockdale County in 1962, 59%.
Newton County girls also dow
ned the Region-foe Winder-Bar
row girls team 38-30 Friday
evening, but lost to South Hall
on Saturday.
Terry Schell and Thad Blan
kenship had two fine games Fri
day and Saturday. Schell scored
29 markers in the Winder clash
and came back with 22 at South
Hall. Blankenship was the lea
ding rebounder in both games with
13 and 16 respectively. He also
scored a total of 36 points in the
two important victories.
In the South Hall game four
of the five starters hit in double
figures: Schell 22, Blankenship
21, Richard Allen 17, and Bubba
Hill 11.
The statistics for the Ram team
in the Saturday game at South Hall
was a good one also. The field
goal mark was 54% on 32 of 59
shots. In free throws the Brad
ley boys made good on 15 of 19
for 79%.

State Park Fishing
Restrictions Made
Because of intense fishing on -
State Park lakes within Georgia
no more fishing by commercial
means —trot lines, set hooks,
jug lines fish baskets and all
commercial gear—will be allow
ed in these waters, the Game
and Fish Commission said today.
"We find that fishing pressure
on these lakes is so intense that
it requires all the fish the lake
can provide for rod-and-reel
fishermen,” said George T. Bag
by, Commission Director.
Further, he pointed out that
trot lines and set hooks hang
ing from trees present an element
of danger to sport fishermen.
The Commission cooperated
with the State Parks Department
in making this change.

Tournament Time Is Near
As we enter February most of the sports talk around Covington
centers on high school basketball and the upcoming tournaments.
The sub-region and Region BAA finals are most important to the
Newton County Rams and Coach Ronald Bradley as is also the
case for the NCHS girls and Coach Tom Wortman. Both tourneys
this month will be held at the Gainesville High gymnasium with the
sub-region meet coming on Feb. 15-16-17.
For the Rams this year will mark the first time that the team is
not assured of a spot in the region finals which goes to the top two
teams of each division. In years past, the Rams dominated the stan
dings of the West division and thereby was assured of an advanta
gious spot in the tourney. This year there are at least three teams
who could take the number one and number two spots—Newton,
South Hall and Forsyth County. Also add the threat that Gainesville
is playing on their home court.
Coach Bradley stated last week that the West division could end
up in a three-way tie. Two of those three teams could land in the
same bracket and that invariably would eliminate one of them for the
finals on Feb. 23-24, also at the Gainesville gym.

BASKETBALL BANNER:
Bubba Sammons, a freshman on Coach Ronald Bradley’s Ram team
this season, shows promise of becoming another Bob Cousy as a
dribbler. He playedpartofthe fourth quarter against Winder-Barrow
Friday night and did a bit of fancy dribbling in the backcourt that
brought roars of applause from the fans. ..One of the most-appreci
ated facilities at the NCHS gymnasium this season is the addition of
an extra scoreboard. In fact, both scoreboards (on either end of
the gym) are new this campaign. ..The Rams’ last trip to the Gaines
ville High gym brought' a region title to the NCHS team. The Rams
downed Bill Ensley’s Hart County team 51-39. However, the Hart
Countians went on to win the State AA title in Atlanta. . .The Atlanta
Constitution stated last week that the Rams had lost three in a row
this season. This was an error, as the Walker victory came between
the second and third loss.
Rockdale County boys coach Richard Moore has pulled two big
upsets this season. Last week his team defeated Westminster (their
first loss of the season) and two weeks ago Moore’s team downed
the Newton Rams at Conyers. . .The Georgia High School Assn, has
announced that the 1968 All-Star football and basketball games will
be held in Macon this coming August. The two star tilts were play
ed in Savannah last year and before that in Atlanta. . ."No man ever
gets so rich that he doesn’t need a good neighbor.” (Anonymous).
Mark November 9 on your calendar for that is the date the South
eastern Conference football race may well be decided. A double
header in Birmingham and a single game in Jacksonville involves
six SEC teams. The doublebill in Birmingham will pit Alabama-
LSU in the afternoon and Tennessee-Auburn at night. In Jackson
ville, Georgia will meet Florida. . .A sign on US 278 Monday stated
"Go Rams—They Did”. It was located ata Mobile homes dealer lot.
Pitcher Claude Raymond of the Atlanta Braves is a coin collector
(and that’s a hobby). . .‘‘Many a life of the party is a washout at
home.” (Anonymous). . .This may not be of interest to you, but the
Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first professional baseball team
(in 1869). . .And by the way, the major league spring training camps
open on Feb. 20 with the pitchers first to report.. .Georgia’s
Vince Dooley says the Bulldogs are in line for a great high school
quarterback, two of which are Charles Dudish of Avondale and Dennis
Chadwick of Decatur.
Lanier Tributaries
Closed To Fishing
All tributary streams to Lake
Lanier will be closed to fishing
in winter months, from Decem
ber 1, through .April 1, the State
Game and Fish Commission an
nounced today. The new regul
ation goes into effect at once.
Commission Director George
T. Bagby said the streams are
to be closed from three miles up
stream down to the lake, during
the months of December, Jan
uary, February and March, to
protect newly stocked trout.
“We didn't want to take this
step, but we were forced into it
by fishermen who just wouldn’t
be good sportsmen.” Bagby said.
“Last year we put a 14-inch
minimum size limit on trout in
Lanier, hoping the newly stocked
fish would be given a chance to
grow. But fishermen continued
to catch, kill and keep these
trout, so we had no alternative
but to close all fishing in these
sections during the winter.”
He pointed out that trout stoc-

ounces each but by May the same
fish will weigh 1 1/2 pounds.
“When they reach that size
they provide good sport fish
ing,” he said. “But there is no
sport in carching those little ones
fresh from the hatchery that con
gregate in those small tributar
ies."

Saturday Night
The popular Louie Tillet, one
of the best wrestlers to appear at
the Sports Palace, will be on the
Saturday night card again this
week as he will meet Tarzan
Tyler. The first match of the
evening will start at the usual
8:30 p. m. time.
The tag team bout of the even
ing will pit the team of Dr. M
and El Mongol against The Ken
tuckian and Mr. Wrestling. The
Kentuckian weighs 360 pounds
and is over 7 ft. tall.
Rubberman Walker vs Dale
Jones is the third match of the
card here Saturday.
Tillet wants Tarzan Tyler.
Dandy Jack will produce El Mon
gol and Dr. M to wrestle Mr.
Wrestling and The Kentuckian.
In last week’s main event, Lo
uie Tillet and Giant Kentuckian
defeated Dandy Jack, Dr. M and
Tarzan Tyler. Tarzan busted
Louie’s forehead in the second
fall with his boot. Louie belie
ves that Tarzan’s boot is loaded.
In the semi-final popular Al
berto Torres defeated Karl Von
Stroheim two straight falls.
In the first match Rubberman
Johnny Walker thrilled the fans
and pined Jack Vansky.

Tech Awaits
Wagner's Ills
ATLANTA—A year ago at this
time, Georgia Tech basketball
Coach John "Whack” Hyder was
wondering what to do about his
team. They were floundering with
a 7-6 record and Phil Wag
ner’s physical status was a ques
tion mark.
And now, a season later, Hy
der is going through much the
same trials. His Yellow Jackets
are 6-7 , having lost seven of its
last 10. And once again Wag
ner’s availability is In question.
The difference in the two re
cords is that in 1966-67, the Jac
kets downed Ohio State 84-73
while this season the Buckeyes
clipped Tech 66-55. Change the
result in that game and the marks
are the same.
One of the big reasons for
that difference was the inability
of Wagner to get back in action.
The Tech captain scored 20 points
against the Buckeyes a year ago
but watched from the bench as he
waits for his pulled abdominal
muscles to heal.
