The size of the pension a re
tired worker receives is direc
tly related to the amount he ear
ned over a period of years prior
to retirement and, in turn, to
his contributions to the pension
fund.
In Newton County, according
to the latest annual report of the
Social Security Administration,
payments to beneficiaries were
at the average yearly rate of
S7OB per recipient.
Beginning in March, when the
first checks reflecting the in
crease will arrive, the local
average will be SBOO.
For the community as a wh
ole, the pension payments will
amount to $2,281,000 a year,
as compared with the previous
total of $2,019,000.
Hand in hand with the bigger
benefits goes an increase in co
sts. Those who have been pay
ing social security taxes on ear
nings below $6,600 will be con
tinued at the same rate for an
other year.
Those earning between $6,600
and $7,800, however, will have
to pay 4.4 percent on the amount
over $6,600. Their employers
will have to contribute a mat
ching amount.
Texas Tornadoes
NEW YORK—One of the
more dubious honors claimed by
Texas—which is big in many
respects —is that it tops all other
states in the number of torna
does, says the Insurance Infor
mation Institute. During the
years 1962-1966. Texas was hit
by 487 tornadoes.

FARMER IS THE

The biggest customer for
all the goods and services
produced in the United
States today is the Ameri

He spends more than SSO

About $29 billion is spent
directly for farm production
needs...for fertilizer, seed,
machinery, feed, tools . . .
for all the things it takes to
make farming the largest industry in America today,
which it definitely is.
That’s why marketing people involved in the making
and selling of farm equipment and supplies are taking
a new look at the American farmer.
