high school levels.
Mrs. Becky N. King, mathema
tics consultant from the State De
partment of Education, served as
leader of the group. One of the
major problems considered by
the group was the advisability of
offering algebra I at the eighth
grade level. Mrs. King referred
to recent studies of this problem
by national leaders in the field
of mathematics.
She strongly advised that if al
gebra I is to be offered to eighth
graders, that the course be off
ered to only outstanding students
who have been carefully selected
through administration of stan
dardized algebra aptitude tests,
that the course be a strong course
(not watered down) using the same
textbook required of ninth grade
algebra I students, that the eighth
grade course consist of the same
amount of material expected of
ninth graders, and that the admin
istrative staff make sure that
eighth grade students composing
the algebra class be provided four
full math courses in grades 9-12.
In her concluding remarks, Mrs.
King recommended a strong pre
algebra unit at the eighth grade
level with the formal algebra I
course being reserved for ninth
grade.
The members of the committee
were Mrs. L. M. Burke, Mrs.
S. W. Newton, Mr. J. D. Smith,
Mr. William Waters, Mrs. Ber
netta Travis, Mrs. W. A. Carlton,
Mr. J. H. Brewster, Mr. S. W.
Newton, Miss Pauline Hardman,

tor, and Miss Louise Reeves,
