A room air conditioner does
just what its name implies; in
stalled in a bedroom or living
area window, it basically cools,
dries and filters the air in that
one room. Single room air
conditioners are available in a
wide variety of sizes and models.
They range from about 5000 BTU/
HR upto perhaps 13,000 BTU/HR.
Most models are designed to be
installed in conventional double
hung windows. However, models
are also available for speciaF
window situations such as case
ment windows.
Multi-room air conditioning Is
a relatively new concept made
possible by new, higher-capacity
room units.
These powerful units have en-

THE MODERN all-electric kitchen includes a planned laundry center such as the one at the left.

They are available as window
models, or as built-in (through
the wall) air conditioners.
Central air conditioners are
more versatile and inexpensive
than in the past. General Elec

forced-air furnace, you have half
your air conditioning system al
ready on hand. Hie air condi
tioner hooks up to the furnace,
and distributes cooled, dried and
filtered air through the same
ducts used in the wintertime for
heated air. It consists of only 3
parts; the cooling coil which
attaches to the furnace, the heat
dispersing condenser outside the
house, and the tubing connecting
the two. An average 6 room
house can enjoy the benefits of
all-over air conditioning for as
low as S7OO or so, thanks to the
factory-sealed components and
the simplicity of the installation.
There’s also available a dou
ble-header sort of unit—a sin
gle unit that both heats and cools
any size home, completely auto
matically. In summer, it cools
and dries the air inside the
house, in winter it reverses the
process and provides warm air
throughout the house. Once the
homeowner has set the thermo
stat for the desired temperature,
the unit maintains that temper
ature year round. It can be in
stalled either inside the house
or just outside, so there is no
need for a furnace room.
When it gets down to deciding
exactly which capacity air con
ditioner is best for your own
particular requirements, your
dealer is your best guide. But if
you know the general types of air
conditioners available, you’re in
a better position to make up your
mind.
Twin Laundry Components Can
Ease That Laundry Drudgery
For the Newton County home
maker who finds the family laun
dry takes up too much of her
valuable time, here’s some good
news.
You can do the laundry for 20
families in a 20-hour week with a
flameless electric washer and
dryer and still have plenty of
time and pep left over for the
other things you like to do.
Without those twin laundry
components, however, the task
would be insurmountable, ac
cording to the Live Better Elec
trically Program of Edison Elec
tric Institute. It would take at
least 2,000 feet of clothes line to
hang all those clothes plus carry
ing out at least 20 baskets of
wet wash, and walking a couple of
Keep The Home
Safe From Fire
As spring approaches, it’s a
good idea to clean your house
thoroughly to make it fire-safe.
Areas like the attic,basement,
utility room and closets have
away of becoming storage places
for magazines, old clothes, furn
iture and other unused items.
These discarded articles can be
highly combustible and make the
possibility of fire much greater,
says the American Insurance As
sociation.
When cleaning out closets or
attics use a flashlight -- never
a candle or lighted match.
So if you roll up your sleeves
and clean up these areas of your
home, you can insure against the
hazards of fire.

miles just to hang them up to
dry. Add to this the compli
cations of rainy, snowy and cloudy
days and life without a flameless
electric clothes dryer gets even
more complicated.
Os course only the local laun
dromat might be called upon to
wash for 20 families but it il
lustrates a point. The flame
less electric dryer plays an in
tegral part in any such Gargan
tuan undertaking--and the smal
ler ones too.
An automatic electric dryer
finishes your clothes on schedule
and offers additional bonuses to
outwit the elements. For in
stance, you can dry Junior’s snow
suit, dehydrate that blouse you
won’t have time to iron before
it gets mildewed. You can fresh
en bed pillows and the ones that
get a constant going over on the
sofa. You can even warm a cold
garment for an ailing husband or
a sick child.
But the job you’ll always re
ly on your flameless electric
dryer for is keeping your week
ly laundry schedule in check.
Although no homemaker will
be called upon to use her elec
tric washer and dryer constant
ly during a 40-hour work week,
it’s nice to know that work-wise,
time-wise and weather-wise a
total electric laundry can be call
ed upon to do the impossible with
the simple flick of a switch or
turn of a dial.

When should your carpet be
professionally cleaned?
The best rule of thumb is:
Before it getss to thoroughly soil

Although professional carpet

In many active household,
where carpets get heavy use, or
in areas with a high degree of
