Is Yours A House Or A Home? I
A house is an enclosure, shel
ter, a place to eat and sleep.
A home is something more ...
something with animation and ex
pression. A good home is a
stimulating influence, congenial
companion, faithful friend. It
holds respect, admiration—even
love.
Such intangibles have no direct
relationship to cost, size or opu
lence. Instead they are creative
achievements, born of human in
spiration and skill.
Every architect, designer or
builder with professional pride
senses a challenge in home plan
ning. He does with building ma
terials what the poet does with
words or the painter with brush
and canvas. In the course of
developing his design, he is part
psychologist, part artist.
Not only does he find out what
the prospective owners want but
also what they are like, their
temperament and subconscious
aspirations. What he learns of
their character traits has strong
bearing on his ultimate design.
As he knows, the home person
ality that will be most pleas
ing to the family is one that
reflects their own.
Another appealing feature of
the well-designed home is a sense
of belonging to its surroundings.

Proper seasoning to maximum
moisture content limits is a man
datory grade requirement for
Southern Pine framing. A dry
condition in lumber is essential to
the overall snugness and stability
of structure which minimizes
maintenance and air conditioning
bills.
Gas Customers Add 40 Million
New Appliances In Past Decade
Approximately 40 million more
gas appliances are in use today
in homes throughout the nation
than there were 10 years ago,
according to the American Gas
Association.
Gas appliances now in daily
service total 136 million, an in
crease of 42 per cent over the
96 million units in service 10
years ago. They are used by
some 46 million residential gas
customers in 50 states, including
nearly 36 million served by ut
ility companies and the remain
der served by LP (liquefied pet
roleum) gas.
Water heaters showed the
greatest numerical gain in the
comparison, rising from 21,400,-
000 in 1958 to 32,450,000 at the
beginning of 1968. Central heat
ing units in service rose 102
per cent, from a level of 9,-
300,000 a decade ago to 18,-

Contours and colors conform with
the landscape. The home seems
to flow with the land and to be
born of the hills and trees around
it.
The ingenious use of natural
materials, such as wood and na
tive stone, is largely responsi
ble for these enchanting impres
sions. Sweeping wood decks and
exterior wails of rough sawn
lumber create a sculptured effect
as if the home sprang to life
from adjacent trees.
A good home is comfortable
and secure as well as warm and
inviting. It combines freedom
with privacy. It takes full ad
vantage of Nature’s blessings—
the heat and light of the sun
and prevailing breezes. It is
warm in winter, cool in sum
mer, delightfully livable at all
ti mes.
Include Garage
In Clean-Up
Is your garage one of those
where the family car “used to”
be kept? If so, says the Ameri
can Insurance Association, it is
one of many of a kind.
Today’s standard-size passen
ger automobiles and station wag
ons frequently won’t fit into gar
ages built two or more decades
ago. As a result, many garages
today are used to store things
in —old furniture, boxes, pap
ers, tires and other items of lit
tle or no value.
“Include cleaning out the gar
age among your Spring Clean-Up
projects,” says the Association.
“By doing so, you will not only
eliminate a potential fire hazard,
but create valuable, clean storage
space.”
800,000 this year. Other types
of gas-fired heating units --
space heaters and wall and floor
furnaces -- increased 37 per cent
from 27,400,000 to 37,425,000.
More homemakers are cooking
with gas than ever before. The
number of gas ranges has in
creased in the past 10 years by
nearly 20 per cent, from 32,-
000,000 in 1958 to 38,175,000
this year. One of the most pop
ular gas appliances is the clothes
dryer, which increased in use by
214 per cent in the past decade.
At the beginningof this year there
were 5,650,000 dryers in service,
compared with 1,800,00010 years
ago.
Other items of gas residential
equipment enjoying increased
usage include 1,825,000 outdoor
gas lights, 600,000 incinerators
and 150,000 central gas air con
ditioners.
Responsible architects and
builders pay careful attention to
obscure structural details which
make the home safe for occu
pancy and protect the buyer’s
investment. If the home is well
endowed structurally, it mellows
with age and almost surely will
increase in value as the years
pass.
According to the Southern Pine
Association, the best assurance
that your home will enjoy last
ing good health is quality in the
structural framework. This
means good design, conscientious
craftsmanship and an appropriate
species and grade of framing
lumber.
Framing lumber holds the
home together. If it is of the
right quality . . . size . . .
your home has the strength to
resist violent storms and the
ravages of time and normal
wear.
PUT YOUR
ROOM WAILS
TO WORK
Every house has as many parti
tions as the separation of living
area requires. When these walls
between rooms are put to work,
you gain extra space and the home
becomes more livable.
According to the Southern Pine
Association, storage, television,
Hi-Fi and many useful functions
can be built into room partitions.
For example-a combination stove
and pass-through between kitchen
and breakfast nook or dining
room.
This practical built-in greatly
alleviates the workload of the lady
of the house whether she’s cook
ing for her family or serving as
hostess for an informal gather
ing.
Solid wood paneling and trim
provide an attractive background
with artful camouflage for built
ins and dividers. Rough sawn
lumber offers an enchanting nat
ural character.
For partition surfaces, three
dimensional patterns of Southern
Pine paneling have striking ef
fect. There is a slight spacing
between panels so that thickness
is visible as well as width and
length. This creates a dramatic
impression in depth with strik
ing shadows and highlights.
The new trend in partitioning
is to employ dividers of less than
full floor-to-ceiling height wher
ever practical. Not only are these
ample for storage or as con
tainers for TV, but they also offer
the room occupants an intriguing
glimpse of what lies beyond.
Freedom of vision enhances the
sense of spaciousness.
"Action”-New
Rallying Cry For
Home Builders
“Where the action Is” may
be a slightly overworked phase,
but it has a refreshingly new
ring for home builders. Many
builders believe that herein lies
the key to fresh zip and stim
ulus for the housing market.
Recent experience with vaca
tion homes fortifies this opinion.
While the construction of conven
tional homes lagged during late
1966 and early 1967, vation homes
starts kept right on rolling along.
The national total, already in
excess of 3 million, is expect
ed to reach 5 million by 1970.
Vacation homes have gained
wide repute as the “sports-cars”
of housing. They generate en
thusiasm because they are asso
ciated with recreation and fun and
builders believe that some of this
should be allowed to rub off on
conventional housing.
How do you build “action” in
a home? For one thing, you can
give it a dramatic, zestful ap
pearance. While house design
has been traditionally conserva
tive, all signs indicate that con
vention is going out the window
with a new image more consis
tent with the space-age evolving.
According to the Southern Pine
Association, the growing preval
ence of wood plank-and-beam and
A-frame systems areevidenceof
the new freedom and boldness
of design. These, incidentally,
are among the more popular
forms of construction for va
cation homes.
In the vernacular of “action”,
the logical companion-pieces for
exposed beam structures are
sweeping wood decks which
create family rooms in the open
air for dining and entertaining
on pleasant days. From the arch
itectural standpoint, there are
few more impressive sights than
a home surrounded on all sides
by sundecks.
With modern techniques, main
tenance can be carefree, too.
Pressure treatment of deck lum
ber with chemical preservatives
assures immunity to insect attack
and conditions of severe weather
exposure. Pre-shrunk Southern
Pine is ideal for this use be
cause of its high strength, resis
tance to wear and ease of treat
ment.
