Oxford College Alumni Honor Many Notables At Banquet
1944, and was a 1948 graduate
of Emory Medical School on the
Atlanta campus.
Dr. Walker spoke about his
memories of Emory and the tre
mendous growth and change that
has taken place on the Oxford
and Atlanta campuses in recent
years. He challenged Emory al
umni throughout the country to
support the Alumni Association
and the Merit Program that has
been responsible for the growth
on both campuses.
President Sanford S. Atwood
of Emory University reviewed
the progress and highlights of
the overall Emory Merit Pro
gram and told of the Ford Foun
dation’s $6 million gift to help
meet the S2B million goal of the
program.
Col. W. Graham Davis, 1967-
68 president of the Oxford Area
Emory Club, presided at the Ban
quet and the Rev. Mr. J. E. Cline
of Covington gave the Invocation.
In presiding Col. Davis used
a gavel presented to the Emory
Alumni Association by Mr. Henry
Bowden, chairman of the Emory
Board of Trustees.
An Emory tie, a surprise gift,
was presented to W. A. "Squire”
Carlton as a representative of
the oldest class present for the
dinner.
Mrs. James Hinton, former
librarian of Emory -at - Oxford
was presented a necklace with
an Emory Seal for being the
person who traveled the great
est distance to attend the af
fair. Mrs. Hinton is from Phil
adelphia.
Dean Bond Fleming of Oxford
College told the group of the
renovation of Few Hall, the mu
sic hall and theatre, and the
building of the new student cen
ter and dining hall on the Ox
ford Campus in his talk to the
group.
Dr. E. J. Callaway of Cov
ington gave a favorable report
on the collections from local
alumni toward the Oxford Area
Club’s part of the Merit Fund.
Mr. Carl Chandler of Gaines
ville, Ga. was presented a pla
que of appreciation from Emory
University for his gift of $45,000
to restore the Old Chapel on
the Oxford campus so that it
could be used for services, wed
dings, and baptisms. Dr. V.Y.C.
Eady, former Dean of Oxford
College, made the presentation.
Dr. Laverne M. Cowan, chair
man of the nominating commit
tee presented the slate of of-

Dr. Frank Walker, a former student at Emory-at-Oxford and a 1948
graduate of Emory Medical School, delivered the main address at the
Oxford Area Emory Club annual dinner party. Dr. Walker is the
President-elect of the Emory University Alumni Association.

remains a patient at the New
ton County Hospital where she
was hospitalized on Friday, April
5. Friends wish for her an
early recovery.

pital while recuperating from re
cent surgery. It is hoped that
she will be able to return home
in the early future.

Norah (Gussie) Freeman under
went major surgery at the South
Fulton Hospital on Friday to cor
rect a broken hip and is recup
erating satisfactorily despite her
advanced age of ninety-one.

Hospital in Augusta and friends

her recovery.
