local teachers.
Most of the numbers of the
FTA are seriously committed
to becoming teachers. During
a series of interviews with sev
eral leaders of the high school
club a variety of reasons were
given by the students for choosing
teaching as a career, but the
main influence was definitely-the
inspiration gained from a teach
er.
Melody Barker, a senior and
the president of the NCHS-FTA,
said, “For as long as I can
remember I have always had a
great respect for teachers. They

were always someone I could
look-up to. My history teachers
have impressed me and my sis
ter, who likes teaching, have
influenced me to want to become
a teacher.’’
“This year FTA has really
broadened my thinking as to
teaching’’, declared Betsie Ro
binson, secretary of the Future
Teachers. “I can see that a
teacher is a respected person in
a community and teaching is the
best field in which to help others.
Enjoying your work is the major
thing to look for when choosing
a career. I enjoy working with
children, so I guess that teach
ing is the career for me.’’
The treasurer of the FTA club
this year is Terry Schell, who
plans to continue his interest and
skill in athletics as a coach.
Terry stated that his associa
tion with Coach Ronald Bradley
had a positive influence in his
decision to pursue teaching as
his life’s work.
“All of my life,’’ reminisced
Elaine Wood, “I have known that
I was going to be a school teach
er. 1 feel sure that I was part
ially influenced by my school
teacher mother, but I think that
more important in my decision
is the fact that I have always
enjoyed learning and I want to
share this joy with others. I
think that it is the responsibility
of a teacher to make learning
a pleasurable experience. This
is what I shall try to do.’’
Mary C. Bruno explained her
decision to teach in this man
ner. “Teaching, to me, would
be the perfect profession because
I could excell in my profession
and still be a good wife and
mother.’’
“I would like to help children
who need special training and I
enjoy the company of small child
ren,” commented Sylvia Hender
son, “so, I would like to become
a teacher like my first grade
teacher.”
Jackie Mathews related her
interest in a teaching career
with sincere pride. “I enjoy

Alpha Tri-Hi-Y
To Buy Easter
Lilies For Home
The March meeting of the Alpha
Tri-Hi-Y was held in the Newton
County School Auditorium on
Wednesday, March 27. The pres
ident, Linda Evans, called the
meeting to order. After a devo
tional by Karen Meadors con
cerning the approaching Easter
season, club business was dis
cussed.
For this months community
project the club is collecting
quarters to buy an Easter lily
for the Smith Home. Linda asked
if anyone in the club would be in
terested in entering the Miss
Teen Contest to be held in Ath
ens. Any member who wished
to attend the Christian Life
Conference on May 3,4, and 5
were to give their names to
Mrs. Callaway.
Cindy Meyer read an Easter
story “The Hidden Treasure of
Easter” from the April Readers
Digest. The meeting was then

ing them. Teaching will enable
me to do both. Another reason
for choosing to become a teach
er is that they are in such great
demand. I feel that teaching
is what God wants me to do in
life and that this is something I
will truly work at whole-heart
edly.”
