Gov. Maddox Addresses The
Newton High Student Body
Gov. Lester G. Maddox, ad
dressing the Newton County High
School student body, said he has
never blamed those who didn’t
vote for him, “especially if they
believed everything they heard
about Lester Maddox from the
major news outlets during the
past 15 years.” He added:
‘‘As a matter of fact, if I
had believed all the things they
said about me, I would have
voted for the opposition, too.”
But since he has been governor,
the picture has changed, Mad
dox said.
“Os course I don’t want to
suggest that everyone has sup
ported me,” he said. “But I
am hearing from people across
Georgia who tell me that
they didn’t vote for me in the
election, but if they could vote
for me now, they would do 50...
“I am thankful for the friends
of the past and the friends of
the present who have joined to
gether to build an administra
tion that truly represents the
people—all the people, where
every person, regardless of how
he voted or who he supported,
has the opportunity to be a part
of Georgia’s government and part
of Georgia’s better today and
a brighter tomorrow.”
At another point, in discussing
his administration to date, he
declared;

GOV. LESTER MADDOX was pleasantly besieged by students of Newton County High School Friday morn
ing after he made a speech at the NCHS gymnasium. Mr. Maddox almost got “hand cramps” from shak
ing hands with well-wishers after the program was concluded. David Henderson, Student Body Pres

The untimely death of Rev.
Martin Luther King was a sad
incident! As was the death of Pre
sident Kennedy...as are the many
deaths in riots over the country...
during marches and burning sto
res. Until all peoples of every co
lor and creed come to know Christ
as we should, there will be no
peace on earth and good will
toward man. There is a law
against stealing, breaking in
stores, taking that which does not
belong to us, and throwing bombs
in to set the buildings on fire.
We have forgotten just how many
this week were also killed in
rioting and protests against the
death of Martin L. King...but
those people so far away were
not guilty...the killer was in
Memphis! Let’s give honor where
honor is due and go after the
killer! Rev. King was a beau
tifully educated person. He was
a minister of the gospel. He
applied himself and went to the
top of his profession In God’s
work. If each of us worked as
faithfully, studied and applied
ourselves to doing God’s will,
then and only then will this be
a better world in which to live.
Thousands of people paid tri
bute to Rev. King this week in
Atlanta. Tbe wife and children
have our heartfelt sympathy.
Let’s strive for love of our
fellow man, as God planned, and
have no more killings. God
can handle any situation that is
not just and right, He does not
intend for us to take things (or
his work) in our own hands...
by clasping God’s hand, and doing
all as He teaches us, that is
right and just...is the only way
