Mrs. Shaw Describes Delightful
Women's Club Trip To Atlanta
PORTERDALE—Mrs. M. B.
Shaw, member of the Porterdale
Woman’s Club of which she was
a former president, was asked
to write an account of the annual
spring trip on April 19-21, 1968).
The time of year has arrived
when everyone starts planning
trips and vacations. Naturally,
the Porterdale Woman’s Club is
always on the ball, and last Fri
day, April 19, twenty-nine mem
bers boarded the Bibb Benevolent
Fund bus with destination, Holi
day Inn, Atlanta, nils trip had
been planned by the Project Com
mittee: Mrs. Henry Whitfield,
Mrs. Hubert Grier, and Mrs.
Grace Moore.
After getting settled in their
rooms, the ladies were told that
they had Friday night to do as
they chose. You can imagine
the mad scramble to get to town
shopping. I hesitate to mention
how many pairs of shoes were
purchased. You really wouldn’t
believe it! Four ladies over
spent their allowances and had
their shoes mailed home. Ano
ther lady had her picture taken
with the shoe salesman while
busily examining shoes, unaware
that her friends were borrowing
her own camera.
Some enjoyed movies while
there were some exploring the
Regency and others rested at the
inn. One group played rook and
were finally serenaded by Mrs.
Travis Christian and her har
monica. By the way, the guests
in room #276 would like to chal
lenge the group going to Jack
sonville Beach in June in a “snor
ing contest”. They feel sure they
have the champion.
Saturday morning proved to be
a beautiful spring day, and the
group assembled in the lobby to
begin the dogwood tour planned
by the Atlanta Transit System.
This tour included a trip to the
Cyclorama and a tour through
the residential sections which
contained historical landmarks.
It was a hungry group who were
dispersed on Peachtree Street
about noontime. Dividing for the
afternoon, they continued shop
ping and getting blistered feet.
The group had the pleasure of
What Does It Take To Build A Church?
Perhaps you glanae at the church on the corner once in a while and wonder what
it would be like to visit during a service What is it that draws those people to that
particular building every week? What built that church?
The only possible answer is — the love of God. Their love of God prompted them
to sacrifice and give so that the sanctuary might be built. The love of God compels
them to meet there wiith others who serve Him. Their love of God compels them to
"go. and tell others".
We pray that you will be drawn to such a church this week and that
you will align yourself with it You can help build it into
something even better

dinner and an evening of enter
tainment at the Atlanta Dinner
Theater or better known as the
Red Barn on Campbellton Road.
The play now showing is "Period
of Adjustment”. The food is the
best you can find. A sleepy
group returned to the motel with
hopes that the snoring would not
be repeated. Some were later
reported to have slept with cotton
in their ears.
Sunday morning, we enjoyed a
smorgasbord breakfast and fel
lowship together. The Bibb bus
with Cecil Smallwood as driver
arrived at nine o’clock and car
ried us to Lenox Square. We
remained on the bus while Mrs.
Reuben Rutledge led us in our
devotional, using as her topic
“The Power of Prayer”. Every
one was inspired deeply with this
meditation from her own exper
iences.
Another great meal was in
store for the group at Yohannan’s
Restaurant. Afterwards, the la
dies went to the Swan House,
former home of Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Hamilton Inman, now
owned by the Atlanta Historical
Society. You could use pages
describing this lovely home and
still be unable to really capture
its beauty. Several of the mem
bers, being unable to climb the
stairs, enjoyed the chair lift
which the former owner had in
stalled for her own use.
The grand finale of the week
end trip was a tour of the Ex
ecutive Center on West Pace’s
Ferry Road with Governor and
Mrs. Lester Maddox personally
greeting the hundreds of guests.
It was amazing to see the num
ber of visitors waiting to get
inside.
The trip home was filled with
singing and harmonica music and
promises of everyone to keep in
secrecy the priceless moments
of the weekend. We would like
to express our appreciation to
the club project committee and
the Bibb Manufacturing Company
for a wonderful experience.
Comments overheard during
such a trip are always fun to
recall:
Lois W.; (to Lucille S.) “You
haven’t slept a wink, have you?”
Louise G.: “She hasn’t and
neither have the rest of us.
Who taught you to snore so many
ways?”
Euphie C.: “Katherine, don’t
tell where we are going tonight.
Jane’s carrying us to a movie
in Buckhead. I hope she knows
where she’s going, for I sure
am lost!”
Katherine W.: “Don’t worry.
I’ll take a pill and pass out.”
Maggie J.: "Dora, I can’t
sleep. The bed’s too soft.”
Dora I.: "Well, get on the
floor with Katherine. She’s used
to sleeping on aboard at home.”
Helen H.: “Do you think we’d
better buy more shoes?”
Frances M.: “I’m having mine
mailed home so I won’t have
to get off the bus with them.”
(Several others liked this plan,

Each carried projects in the
