Newton Edges Gainesville 3-2
BY 808 GREER
(News And Sports Editor)
The Newton Rams put a crimp in the Region BAA baseball hopes
of the Gainesville Red Elephants Thursday afternoon at Legion
Field as the home forces downed the visitors 3-2. The loss inflicted
on Gainesville gave the Winder-Barrow Bulldogs a clear path
to the Region title. Winder has not lost a region tilt and Gainesville
has dropped two.
Again it was the steady defense
and strong pitching of Coach Ron
ald Bradley’s team that brought
the win to NCHS. Ken Hodges
and Tommy Moore were the lead
ing hitters for the Ram clan.
They each had two safeties and
Moore batted in one of the runs.
Both Gainesville and Newton
scored one of their markers
on errors.
Tony Harris started the game
for Coach Bradley. He gave up
two hits in four innings until
he was relieved by Hodges in
the fifth. Harris developed a
wild streak in the fifth as he
walked the first two enemy
swingers. Hodges came in and
retired the next three batters
without a run crossing the plate.
For Gainesville, Vandiver and
Langford each had two safeties
in the game.

Score Book Has Wealth Os Information
Fans who go to see the Braves play other teams of the National
League at Atlanta Stadium are depriving themselves of a lot of
enjoyment by not buying a Braves Score Book (program). For 30
cents you cannot read about baseball and the records in no other
publication in such abundance.
For instance this season the Braves have a two-page spread
of Brave players with their signatures and pictures of each player.
Other noteworthy features of the *6B book are:
Warren Spahn set 15 pitching records while he was a member of
the Braves in Boston and Milwaukee. And Brave players hold nine
major league records since 1900. The most recent record set by a
Brave player was in 1966 when Tony Cloninger batted in nine runs
in one game against San Francisco.
There is a complete listing of all Brave players who have been
selected for the All-Star game since its inception in 1933.
Then you may wonder how the two major loops ended the 1967 sea
son. Both league standings for 1967 are listed in the book.
Ever wonder how many Brave brothers are now playing baseball
in the National League? There is a page in the book that tells about
the Aaron boys, the Niekros, the Boyers, and the Alous.
There are (or will be soon) eight players in the 500 home run
career echelon. This season the Braves’ Henry Aaron will reach
that mark. He had 481 at the start of the 1968 season. Pertinent
HR information is given in the '6B Score Book.
Wnata’ watch the Braves on TV while they are on the road? The
complete TV slate is given on page 19.
We’ll bet a lot of you Newton Countians didn’t know that there are
three "Gourmet Foods’’ concession stands at Atlanta Stadium. These
are places that you can get a miniature meal such as Pizzas, Fried
Shrimp, Chicken in a basket and milkshakes.
And here’s somewhat of a record that may stand for years: Jim
Clarkston, an 1887 Boston pitcher, won 49 and lost 19 games of the
72 tilts in which he hurled that year.
Someone asked Bob Wheeler, who is a former Ram baseball and
football star, who he thought was the best pitcher ever to hurl for
the NCHS Rams. Bob said it would either be Bobby Hopkins or Stan
Edwards Gary Steele of Georgia Tech, whose grandparents live
in Covington, has a 4-1 baseball record as a hurler at Tech. His
earned-run average is 1.70 Anger is only one letter short
of danger (Philnews).
Henry Baker recently was elected president of the Newton Little
League. This is somewhat of a coincidence in that Henry was a
member of the first championship LL team at Covington Mills.
That team was managed by his late father, Buddy Baker
As of December 31, 1967, there were 25,650 miles completed of the
41,000 miles of the U. S. Interstate System. This is 63% and, no
doubt, will help the flow of traffic to sporting events "Only the
guy who isn’t rowing has time to rock the boat.’’ (L & N Magazine).
