Jaycees Bring Back Trophies From District Meeting

NEWTON COUNTY JAYCEES brought home three coveted trophies from the Region Six Jaycee meeting

Jaycees Win Events At Region Meeting
On Saturday, April 27, the New
ton County Jaycees attended a Re
gional Jaycee Meeting at Monroe.
The Jaycees were entered in sev
eral events of that day-the
“Speak-Up Jaycee,” represented
by Malcolm Kessinger; “Spark
Plug,” represented by Jerry Ald
ridge; and golf, represented by
R. T. Smith, Jack Harwell, Mal
colm Kessinger and Mike Cost
ley.
Malcolm Kessinger won first
place in the speaking contest.
This was the first time a New
ton County Jaycee had received
a first place. Malcolm was pre
sented a beautiful engraved gold
and wood plaque. He also re-

cees, was honored by winning in
a four way tie for the first place
in the "Outstanding Local Jaycee
President in the 6th Region”.
He was presented with a beauti
ful gold plaque for this honor.
The Newton County Jaycee
WILLIAM WOMACK, President
of the Newton County Jaycees,
was the recipient of the “Out
standing Local President” at
Monroe at the Regional Jaycee
’ Meeting.
Chapter won first place in the Re
gion on visitations to other clubs
and other Regional Meetings. For
this the club received an elegant
gold trophy.
The Jaye es were extremely
proud of the plaques and trophies
won by the club and individual
members.
Perino Dearing
VALPARAISO, Fla.-First
Lieutenant Perino M. Dearing,
son of Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Dear
ing of Floyd Street, Covington,
Ga., has arrived for duty at Eg
lin AFB, Fla.
Lieutenant Dearing, an elec
tronic engineer, is assigned to a
unit of the Air Force Systems
Command. He previously served
at Patrick AFB, Fla.
The lieutenant, a 1959 gradu
ate of Newton County High School,
attended North Georgia College.
‘He received B. S. and M. A. de
grees from the University of
North Carolina and was comm
issioned there in 1963 upon com
pletion of the Air Force Reserve
Officer^ Training Corps pro
gram.
His wife, Kae, is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Ledger
wood of 110 E. Tenn. Ave., Oak
Ridge, Tenn.

Courthouse each April 26 (Confederate Memorial Day) by Ordinary
Donald G. Stephenson. Putting up the flag has been Mr. Stephen
son’s pleasure annually for almost a score of years.
Local Jaycettes And Jaycees
Attended The Region 6 Meeting
The Spring Meeting of the Sixth
Region Jaycees and Jaycettes was
held Saturday April 27, in Mon
roe.
Five Local Jaycettes attended
the Business Meeting at 2:00.
They were: Mrs. Wayne Hunt,
Mrs. Jerry Aldridge, Mrs. Nel
son Allen, Mrs. R. T. Smith, Jr.,
and Mrs. Mike Witherspoon.
During this Business Meeting,
Mrs. Mike Witherspoon was el
ected as the Sixth Region Trea
surer for the coming year.
Other Officers elected were:
Region Director, Brenda Norton,
Hampton; Secretary, Linda Ste
phens, Duluth; and Publicity
Chairman, Nelda Freeman, Mil
ledgeville. Os special interest
at the meeting was a report that
the Sixth Region Jaycettes had
completely furnished a Day Room
at the Central State Hospital in
Milledgeville. The Jaycettes had
adopted the furnishing of this
room as a Sixth Region project
and each local club was asked to
participate.
During the Banquet held that

night, the Newton County Club
won awards in the following cate
gories: Second Place for Aiding
the Jaycees, Second Place for
Internal Programs and First
Place for Membership Increase.
Mrs. Jerry Aldridge won First
Place in the Jaycette Speak Up
program held earlier in the after
noon, and Mrs. Mike Witherspoon
won Second Place for her entry
as Outstanding Local Jaycette.

The April meeting of the Gam
ma Tri-Hi-Y was held Wed
nesday, April 24, with Emily
Morgan presiding. A challeng
ing devotional was given by Bar
bara Mitchell on the theme,
“Times Like These”.
The Gamma’s Youth Assembly
delegates, Teresa Walden and
Fran Tuck, gave the club a re
port on the activities of the
Youth Assembly.
The next meeting of the“Y”
clubs will be a joint meeting of
all the clubs for the installation
of next year’s officers.
The officers for next year’s
Senior Tri-Hi-Y will be: Carolyn
Caulkins, President; Barbara
Mitchell, Vice-President; Bren
da Herring, Secretary; Julia
Ellis, Treasurer; and .Susan
Kirkland, Reporter. The Project
Chairmen, World Service Chair
man, and Chaplain will be chosen
later by the newly elected Pre
sident.
Four of the club’s officers will
attend the Officers’ Training
Conference, June 4-8, 1968 at
Rock Eagle.
The club elected Linda Digby
as their contestant for the “Miss
