Herbert Duke, Jr.

Duke, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs.
Herbert W. Duke, 203 Elizabeth
St., Covington, Ga., has been
named Airman of the Month in
his unit at Udorn Royal Thai
AFB, Thailand.
Airman Duke, a supply inven
tory specialist, was selected for
his exemplary conduct and duty
performance. The airman is a
member of the Pacific Air
Forces.
He was graduated from Newton
County High School in 1962 and
attended North Georgia College
and West Georgia College be
fore entering the Air Force.
His wife, Kay, is the daughter
of Dr. and Mrs. Raymond A.
Moody, 779 Gay Drive, Macon,
Ga.

Simon Wilkes, Jr.

B. Wilkes Jr., son of Mr. and
Mrs. Simon B. Wilkes of 8154
Kirk St., .Covington, Ga., has
completed basic training at Lack
land AFB, Tex. He has been
assigned to the Air Force Tech
nical Training Center at Chanute
AFB, Hl., for specialized school
ing as afire protection specialist.
Airman Wilkes is a 1967 graduate
of R. L. Cousins High School.
Douglas Gamer
U. S. ARMY, VIETNAM
(AHTNC) —Army Specialist Four
Douglas Garner, 19, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Guy Garner, Route 5,
Covington, Ga., is participating
in “Operation Truong Cong Dinh”
in Vietnam with other members
of the 9th Infantry Division.
Located in the Mekong Delta
region south of Saigon, the al
lied counteroffensive also in
cludes the 11th Regiment of the
Republic of Vietnam’s Seventh
Army, as well as American Na
val and Air Cavalry units.
Named after a Vietnamese pa
triot, the operation is designed
to drive the communists away
from the major population cen
ters and keep traffic moving on
Route 4, the vital lifeline be
tween Saigon and the southern
most region of the delta.
So far the operation has ac
counted for over 500 Viet Cong
dead and has shoved the enemy
away from My Tho, the capital
of Dinh Tuong Province.
Spec. Garner, assigned with
Company A, 3rd Battalion of
the division’s 60th Infantry, en
tered the Army in May 1966,
completed basic training at Ft.
Benning, Ga., and was last as
signed in Germany. He has
received the Combat Infantryman
Badge.
He attended Newton County
High School.
David Parker
FT. MONMOUTH, N.J.
(AHTNC)—-Private First Class
David J. Parker, 20, son of Mr.
and Mrs. David H. Parker, Route
2, Covington, Ga., completed
an electronics specialist course
April 19 at the Army Signal
School, Ft. Monmouth, N. J.
During the course, he was
trained to operate and maintain
various Army electronic equip
ment.
Pvt. Parker’s wife, Barbara,
lives on Route 2, Covington.

Douglas M. Wheeler son of Mr.
and Mrs. Neal W. Wheeler Sr.
of 29 Hazel St., Porterdale, Ga.,
is on duty at Da Nang AB, Viet
nam.
Sergeant Wheeler, an air frei
ght specialist, is a member of the
Pacific Air Forces.
Before his arrival in Vietnam,
he was assigned to Andrews AFB,
Md.
The sergeant is a graduate of
Newton County High School.
His wife, Judith, is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Willard F. Sharp
of 21 Haddon Road, Somers Point,
N. J.
