Local Shooters Bag Top
Awards In Piedmont Open
Lakeside Gun Club held its
largest and most successful skeet
shoot May 4 and 5 hosting 47
shooters Saturday and 63 shoot
ers Sunday.
Local shooters gave an excel
lent accord of themselves with
wins in the 410 gauges going
to Billy Banks, Goodwin Tuck
and Gilbert Gober. Dr. Tuck
was tied for champion in the
410 to lose in a sudden death
shoot off with Capt. Steven
Davis of Warner Robins.
The 28 gauge again was de
cided by a shoot off between
Honor Fillingame of Dawson and
Jerry Mayer of Atlanta with the
win going to Fillingame. Local
winners included Dr. Tuck and
Gilbert Gober.
Twenty gauge winners included
Billy Banks as champion with
a 99. Banks had to defeat Everett
Chastain of Marietta and Bob
Ficquett Wins Field Day
E. L. Ficquett School of Cov
ington won the 1968 Junior High
Field Day held Friday at Sharp
Field. Ficquett compiled a total
of 126 points, Porterdale had 109
points, Palmer-Stone 89, Heard-
Mixon 28, and Mansfield 15.
Winners in each event are as
follows:
50-yard dash: Massey of Ficq

son of Porterdale (7th grade
boys).

A record entry of 63 shooters
competed in the all-gauge cham
pionships. Eventual champion
was Jack Mason of Dawson who
defeated Dr. Tuck in a sudden
death shoot off with a score of
98 x 100. Local winners in
cluded Dr. Tuck with a 98x100,
Billy Banks 97x100, Guy Evans
with 94x100 and Joan Tuck
86x100.
High over all champion was
Dr. Tuck who had to defeat Billy
Banks and Everett Chastain in
a sudden death shoot off with
the small 410 gauge gun.
Two man team awards in the
twelve gauge went to Dr. Tuck
and Thomas A. Gunn of Coving
ton while the local 5 man team
of Dr. Tuck, lliomas Gunn, Gil
bert Gober, Billy Banks, and John
Chesnut won with 478x500.

Little Leaguers Honor Memory Os Tommy Smith

Tommy Smith was observed by the teams who opened the 1968 schedule. They stood with heads bowed at
home plate. The Porterdale Yankee team is shown at left and the Covington Braves are along the third
base line. The prayer was given by Rev. Kent Anglin, pastor of the Oxford Baptist Church.

Atlanta Raiders
In Softball
The Porterdale Softball team
downed the Atlanta Raiders in a
twinbill at Snow Field Friday
night by scores of 5-0 and 5-4.
Hurling the two tilts were Blunt
Patterson and Joel Farrow.
Charles Pickett slammed a home
run in the first game.
On Saturday night the Porter
dale club split a doubleheader
with the Monroe Merchants team.
Porterdale won the first game
6-5 and lost the nightcap 5-2.
This coming weekend will see
two nights of fine softball be
tween the Porterdale and wood
man Co. of Atlanta on Friday,
and the host team and Futo’s
Body Shop of Atlanta on Satur
day night. The first game each
night will start at 8 o’clock.
Jim Gainer Takes Singles Crown
In State AA Tennis Tournament
Jim Gainer of Newton County
High is the state Class AA sing
les tennis champion. The State
Tennis Tournament was held at
Mercer University, Macon, May
3 and 4. Jim gained a place in
the State Tourney when he be
came Region BAA Champion by
defeating the representatives of
Elbert County, Baldwin County,
and Gainesville.
Jim won the State Champion
ship by victories over Bernard
Scoggins of Dalton, (6-0, 6-1),
Robert Turner, Bainbridge, (8-6,
6-2), and John T. Johnston of
Atlanta’s Northside High School
in split sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Jim is a three-letter varsity

Barbara Johnson, the girl’s
singles champ of Region BAA,
and Susan Lott and Linda Evans,
Region doubles titlist, lost in the
first-round of the State A A Ten
nis Tournament Friday at Macon.
Miss Johnson lost in straight
sets to Nancy Myers of Northside
of Atlanta, 6-3 and 6-4. Evans
and Lott were beaten by the de
fending State AA champs, Mary
Helen Basington and Polly Ted
rlck of Waycross in straight
sets.
The other NCHS entry, Jim
Gainer, won the State AA boy’s
singles over John T. Johnston
of Atlanta’s Northside 6-4, 2-6
and 6-4. He rallied in the final
set after being down 0-4. (See
