He is survived by two sisters,
Mrs. H. B, McDonald, Covington;
Mrs. P. J. Garrison, High Point,
North Carolina and several
nieces and nephews.
Chaster W. Piper
Chester W. Piper passed away
at his home in the Starrsvllle
Community on Tuesday, May 7,
after a short illness. A native
of Newton County, he was 51
years old and was employed by
Howard Parrish Grocery Store.
Prior to his return to Coving
ton he had made his home in
Atlanta and was employed by the
Atlanta Transit Company for
many years. He was a member
of St. Lukes Methodist Church
in Atlanta and was a Veteran
of World War Two, serving with
the US Army.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday afternoon, May 8, at
Starrsvllle Methodist Church
with Rev. Eddie Walton officiat
ing. Interment was in Starrs
vllle Cemetery with J. C. Har
well and Son Funeral Home in
charge. Serving as pallbearers
were Edward Cowan, Chester
McCullough, Ellie Coady, J. W.
Johnston, Alton Barnett, Olin
Fincher and Howard Parrish.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Elsie Pope Piper, two sons, Phil
lip Piper, Tony Piper, daughter,
Mrs. Bobby Anglin, all of Cov
ington; brother, Oscar Piper,
Riverdale; sisters, Mrs. Hattie
Hallas, Mrs. Lila Moddox, both
of Miami, Florida; Mrs. J. C.
Pope, Atlanta; Mrs. A. L. Bar
nett, Forest Park; Mrs. J. W.
Johnston, Covington and two
grandchildren.

Funeral services for William
Harry Driggers, 43, of 1545 Col
umbia Drive, Decatur, were held
Wednesday afternoon in Ward’s
Chapel with the Rev. J. C. Ar
wood officiating. Burial was
in Fairview Memorial Gardens,
Stockbridge.
Mr. Driggers, co-owner of the
Pony Express Western Store In
Covington, was killed Monday
when his car ran off the road on
1-20 and landed upside down on
Evans Mill Road.
A veteran, he served in the
Army during World War II and
was a member of the VFW. He
was a member of Peachcrest
Baptist Church and a Mason.
Survivors Include his wife, the
former Imogene Davis; three
daughters, Mrs. Ronnie Ander
son, Claxton, and Misses Bever
ly and Harriett Driggers, both
of Decatur; his mother, Mrs.
Bessie Driggers, Vidalia, and
five sisters, Mrs. Josephine Van
ness, St. Petersburg, Fla., Mrs.
P. G. Jenkins, Jr. and Mrs. Pur
nell Rogers, both of Claxton, and
Mrs. Wayman Faulk and Mrs.
J. D. Meeks, both of Vidalia.

R. B. Yancey of Covington pas
sed away in a private nursing
home at Marshallville on Wed
nesday, May 1, following a lin
gering Illness. A native of New
ton County, he was 74 years old
and a member of the First Bap
tist Church.
Funeral services were con
ducted on Friday morning, May
3, at the First Baptist Church
with Rev. Edgar A. Callaway,
pastor of the church, officiat
ing. Interment was in Coving
ton City Cemetery with J. C.
Harwell and Son Funeral Home
in charge of arrangements. Serv
ing as pallbearers were Tom
Stubbs, Julian Stubbs, Carlton
Stubbs, Asa T. Stubbs, Fred
Stubbs, Jr. and Theron Stubbs.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Clyde Stubbs Yancey, one
daughter, Mrs. Ray Moore, both
of Covington; two brothers, Webb
Yancey, Porterdale; Emmett
Yancey, Augusta; two grandsons,
Kenneth Piper, Atlanta; Charles
Moore, Covington and one great
grandson, Michael Piper of At
lanta.
Newborn Church
Revival Set
For May 19-23
A week of special services will
be held at the Newborn Methodist
Church in Newborn May 19-23.
The services will start each night
at 8 p. m. with Bishop Marvin A.
Franklin preaching.
Bishop Franklin is a native of
Georgia and now resides at Jack
son, Mississippi. He served in
the North Georgia Conference for
many years before being conse
crated a bishop of the Methodist
Church and is an alumnus of Em
ory at Oxford.
Dr. Virgil Eady, Dean-Emeri
tus of Emory at Oxford, will lead
the singing. The public is cor

To Lecture Today
On Thursday, May 9, Mr. The
odore Davis, Assistant Professor
of History and Social Sciences at
Oxford, will present the first
of three lectures in this year’s
Faculty Lecture Series.
His lecture is entitled, “Edu
cation: Patterns from the Past.”

A. Brantley, a native of Florida,
is assistant Secretary, Christian
Social Minlsterles Department of
the Southern Baptist Home Mis
sion Board. He directs the min
istry in Baptist Centers which
includes Good Will Centers, Mis
sion Centers, Rescue Missions,
Home for Unwed Mothers in New
Orleans and Church Community
Weekday Minlsterles.
Rev. Brantley attended Stetson
University at Deland, Florida
and the New Orleans Theologi
cal Seminary at New Orleans,
Louisiana. While Superintendent
of the Baptist Rescue Mission in
New Orleans, he made extensive
changes in the mission homes
there. He was also involved
in the beginning of the Baptist
Friendship House and the Good
Samaritan Home in New Orleans.
From there he went to Mem
phis, Tennessee where he served
as Director of the Baptist Mis
sion Center, coming to the At
lanta office of the Home Mission
Board to direct the work in Bap
tist Centers in 1957. Rev. Brant
ley is also the author of "God

with 177 present and the Training
Union record was broken with 88
present. In the past two months
they have had two young men to
announce their call into the min
istry.

One motorist in the City of
Covington during the past week
had five charges placed against
him after his arrest by City
policemen. However, he did not
appear for trial Monday in City
Judge E. W. Strozier’s Court and
forfeited his S2OO cash bond.
The charges were: driving under
the influence, resisting arrest,
reckless driving, speeding and
disorderly conduct. The man’s
license was also suspended for
a year.
In other cases heard or cal
led for trial by Judge Strozier
included four for driving without
a license (DWOL), three for
speeding, three for driving under
the influence of Intoxicants (DUI).
and five for being drunk.

One man had the charge of
carrying a pistol without a li
cense, and he forfeited his SSO
bond on this charge. Single
cases were also heard by the
Judge on reckless driving, run
ning a red light and not having
a proper inspection sticker.
