at the Jaycette election of state
officers held on Saturday, May
11, The new state Jaycette of-
ficers are President, Mrs, Gen
eva Reynolds of Martinez; In
ternal vice-president, Mrs, An
nette Hills, Monroe County; Ex
ternal vice-president, Mrs, San
dra Wells, Southside Savannah;
Recording Secretary, Mrs, Joyce
Long and Treasurer, Mrs, Bar
bara Murphy. Newton County
Jaycettes had three votes in the
election of these state officers,
The convention was a combi
nation of pleasure as well as
business, The weekend includ
ed a get acquainted party, a lu
au, pirate party and an installa
tion banquet and inaugural ball
to afford a most enjoyable week
end,
Standard-Lewis Engagement Announced
Mr, and Mrs. Howard H, Stand
ard of Covington announce the
engagement of their daughter,
Joan Dianne, to Thomas Gerald
Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs.
E. O. Lewis of Porterdale.
Miss Standard is a senior at
Newton County High School.
Mr. Lewis attended Newton
County High School and is pre
sently employed by Bibb Manu
facturing Company.
The wedding will be June 15.
American Legion Auxiliary Met
Monday Evening At Legion Home
The American Legion Auxil
iary Unit #32 held their regular
meeting Monday evening, May 13,
at the American Legion Home,
Mrs, Lewis White, Unit Pres
ident, called the meeting to or
der in the regular manner, with
the pledge to the flag, singing of
the Star Spangled Banner and the
group repeating the Preamble in
unison, Mrs, Jack Chapman,
Unit Chaplain, offered the open
ing prayer,
Roll call of officers and the
reading of the minutes and their
approval was next on the pro=-
gram, Reports were then given
by the standing committees,
The month of May being Mem=
orial Month, Mrs, Sam Hay, was
then introduced as the speaker
of the evening, Mrs, Hay brought
a very inspiring message to the
Unit in remembering our ser=
vicemen who have given the su=
preme sacrifice and to those who
are fighting on foreign soil to
Benton-Elijah Engagement
Mr, and Mrs. Clarence Benton
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Marva Benton, to Otis
Lee Elijah, son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Elijah of Bainbridge.
Miss Benton was graduated
from Savannah State College
where she participated in many
of the social and academic or
ganizations of the college. She
is presently employed by the
Newton County Board of Educa
tion.
Mr. Elijah also received his
B. S. Degree from Savannah State
College where he was a member
of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fratern
ity. He is now working at Utica
Junior College in Mississippi,
and is presently working toward
a M, S, Degree in Building Tech
nology.

All citizens owning dogs are advised to
have their dogs inoculated for rabies. A
concerted effort will be made to catch all
dogs that have not been inoculated this
year. On and after Mar. 1, 1968 those
dogs caught that have not been innocu
lated will be impounded for (s)days and if
not claimed during that period will be
destroyed.
We invite the cooperation of all our
citizens in carrying out this program of
protecting its citizens against rabies.

Smith,
The committee then gave the
group a preview as to the enter=
tainment to be given at the hos=
pital party, Those taking part
were Mrs, Charles Smith, Miss
Becky Smith and Mrs, Nat Mor=-
gan,
Concluding the meeting the
‘“‘hymn of the month’’ was sung
ending with the Auxiliary song
““Blue and Gold,”’
The wedding is set for June
15 at the New Hope Baptist
Church.

luncheon, buffet style. The table
featured a centerpiece of per=
manent flowers in green hues, in
a cutgalss bowl. Small tables
for seating guests were over=
laid with white linen.
