School Children Must Be
Immunized, New Law Says
All children admitted to pub=
lic schools in Georgia for the
first time this fall must have
been immunized against certain
contagious diseases — SO says
Act 1266 of the 1968 Georgia
General Assembly which became
law on April 13. As provided
under the law, the State Board
of Health has determined that
required immunizations will be

and open flames away from these
materials, the Association
warns.
The Association suggests that
you have available an approved
and fully charged fire extinguish
er for use in the event of fire,
poliomyletis, smallpox and
measles.
““The child’s parent or guar=-
dian shall furnish the school
to which admittance is sought
with a certificate of a physician
licensed under the laws of the
State of Georgia or public health
department acknowledging that
the child has been immunized
before the child shall be admit
ted,” the act states. The bill
then provides that contagious dis=
eases itemized in appropriate
rules and regulations spelled out
by the State Board of Health will
be those for which immuniza
tions are required.
According to Dr. Elton S, Os=
borne, Jr., deputy director of the
Georgia Department of Public
Health, all of Georgia’s 159 local
health departments are expected
to cooperate in the immuniza
tion program. ‘‘Those children
who are not immunized by pri
vate physicians may be vacci
nated through local health clin
ics,”” he said, ‘‘and issued ap

course, not every child entering
a Georgia public school for the
first time will require immuni=
zations,’’ Dr. Osborne pointed
out, ‘‘Many have already been
vaccinated against the itemized
diseases by private physicians
or local healthdepartments. Pre=
viously immunized children will
need only obtain a validated cer=-
tificate to meet these new legal
requirements,’’
““The transfer student from
another state must also comply,”’
the health official pointed out,
“regardless of his grade level,
before he can gain admission to
a Georgia public school. ¢““Time
is short,’”” he concluded. ‘‘Pa=-
rents with children affected by
this new ruling should take ime
mediate steps toward getting them
immunized. Obviously, it will
be impossible to handle all these
children in the weeks just pre=
ceding the opening of school. Pri=-
vate physicians can’t do it; local
health departments can’t do it.
We must begin now.”’

Adams Was Speaker At Hi-Y
“Faith For The Future’ was
the theme of the 1968 Christian
Life Conference at Rock Eaglein
Eatonton. On May 3, thirty
seven Y-Club members from
Newton County High School left
to attend the weekend conference
with Miss Gwen Ellington as
chaperon.
After registering each club, the
four Y-Clubs represented were
assigned to various cabins at
Rock Eagle. Then the students
began a weekend of fun and in=-
spiration.
Friday night assembly was a
time to get acquainted. The
Conference delegates met the
state officials and delegates from
the other clubs all over the
Northeast District. An inter
esting talk was presented by Mrs.
J. O, Williams, a native Texan,
who contributed many valuable
ideas to the three day conference.
On Saturday classroom act
ivities were held in the morn
ing and afternoon. FEach delegate
could attend the class of his
choice, having such selections as
“The Christian Citizen,’’ “Find=-
ing God’s Will,” and ¢‘Affairs
of the Heart.” Another inter=-
esting talk was presented on
Saturday by Reverend Grady Nutt,
a frequent visitor on the Mike
Douglas television show.
Saturday night assembly con=-
sisted of an entertaining talent
show presented by Y=Club mem=
bers who won the district talent
elimination.
The Y=-Clubs of Newton County
High School are proud to an=-
nounce that on Saturday evening
at the District awards, the Sen=-
ior Tri-Hi-Y of NCHS was award=
ed second place for Most Out
standing Club of the Year. The
trophy will be placed with the
other trophies in the case at
the high school.
The highlight of the Christian
Life Conference is the Drama.
The drama is presented in an
atmosphere of quietude and re
verence., A tradition at Rock
Eagle is that no one speaks until
returning to the cabin after com=
pletion of the drama. The 1968
Drama was presented by the
Rockdale County Y-Clubs and
served as a source of inspira=-
tion to every delegate at the
Conference.
On Sunday morning, each young
person attended the Sunday School
for his age group. The classes
were conducted by college stu
dents and district officials. The
church service was a lovely ser=
vice of music and a meditative
message by Mrs, J, O, Williams.
