antique car to drive, the couple
say they ¢‘Hate to come to town,?’?
If you ever visit their place in
the country near Oxford you’ll
understand why.
The little white frame house
is nestled in a setting of century
old oaks and almost hidden by all
the flowers that keep Mrs, Brook=
ing busy. When they moved to
the old Peek place in 1950 there
was almost nothing growing, Mrs.
Brooking recalls. “Only two
bushes on the place,’’ she says,

Ford In Town?
in addition to the mighty oaks.
They planted apple, cherry,
peach, and pear trees that still
bear., Every year there has been
a vegetable garden, In addi
tion, flowers and shrubs grow
in abundance everywhere. The
bridal wreath is thick and showy,
pink honeysuckle, weigela, white
lilacs, snow balls, thrift and iris
are in various stages of bloom.
Coming along for summer and
later are the hollyhocks, dahlias,
verbena, petunias, marigolds,
chrysanthemums. The roses are
budding and the grancy greybeard
was in flower for several weeks.
Mrs. Brooking doesn’t recall
the names of all the flowers
she has planted and that have
spread so luxuriantly., On the
side porch pot plants overflow
their bounds and reach toward
the ceiling of the plastic-lined
porch.
While the flowers keep her at
home, Mr. Brooking looks after
the animals. These include
guinea hens, three roosters, cats,
dogs, a cow, beautiful white rab
bits with pink eyes, and a Shet
land pony there for the 10 grand
children when they visit.
Just a few weeks ago something
got the guinea eggs. Mr. B.
set traps for varmints and caught
18 possums including 8 babies
in the pockets.

In their home and its surround
ings the two reflect another era,
one filled with old fashioned hos=
pitalitys, No one is a stranger
long. This newcomer left their
home loaded with fresh, home=
churned butter, okra, frozen rabe
bit, garden peas, dahlia slips
to root and mint to plant.
The Sara Thornley Circle of
the First Baptist Church will
meet Tuesday evening, May 21,
at 7:30 p.m. at the home of
Mrs. Bill Vaughn with Mrs, Helen
Ivey and Miss Frances King as
co=-hostesses, Miss Jane Reagan
will be in charge of the pro=
gram,
