Georgia’s 10 athletic teams had great seasons during the past
school year. All, except one, baseball. The baseball team won
11 and lost 15 and was the only sport below the .500 mark. . . It
has been announced this week that Jim Youngblood’s basketball
field goal shooting percentage at the University of Georgia is an
SEC record at 58.2%. That’s an excellent record over a three
year span. . .An Atlanta Stadium crowd of 27,000 greeted the
Braves Monday night as the team opened a four-game series with
the San Francisco Giants.
At least one Covingtonian is a member of a Hall Os Fame.
He is Wendell W. Crowe, and he is listed in Oglethrope’s Athletic

Newton Basketball Took Over Governor’s Office

NEWTON COUNTY BASKETBALL literally caused a “Ball” in Governor Maddox’s office at the State
Capitol in March when this photo was taken. Rev. H. N. Earnest of Porterdale brought the photo to
The News office after he had spotted it at the Capital on a recent visit. Shown in the picture is Coach
Ronald Bradley at the desk. Others from left to right: Homer Sharp, NCHS Principal; sheriff Henry
Odum, Jr.; Richard Allen, Terry Schell and Phil Shaw, senior members of the 1967-68 Ram team;
and State Senator Brooks Pennington.

rather than the automatic kick . . . Sign on the Newton Ram football
dressing room: “If you have a weak heart, do not enter this room.”
\oung Phil Shaw, NCHS basketball and golf luminary, has signed
a golf scholarship grant at the University of Tennessee. Phil was
a member of Coach Tom Wortman’s links team for the past two
years since returning to Porterdale from Forsyth, Ga. This marks
the first time in NCHS history that a golfer has received a scholar
ship . . . And, speaking of golf, B. C. Crowell at the Porterdale
Golf Course, says that the Bibb Manufacturing Company tourney
this weekend will have more than 100 entries from all eight Bibb
cities in Georgia.
Would you believe that a writer for the Los Angeles Times
News Service is named Krystal Pool? Well, that’s the truth ...
Ellis Adams says that “either me or Howard Sullivan is going to
win the Bibb Mfg. Co. Golf Tournament this weekend at Porter
dale” . . . St. Pius High won the 440 Relay in the State AA Track
meet Saturday at Jonesboro. Newton High failed to finish in the
top six in this event . . . Washington’s Frank Howard is evidently
putting his weight behind those balls he is hitting of late. Howard
stands 6-6 and weighs 250 pounds. He banged out 10 homers in
six games last week.
Arnold Palmer says that he picked golf as a profession because he
thought the fields of ‘green’ were more prevalent in that sport. He
has done right well, too, as he is now a millionaire.. .The Braves’
Clete Boyer recently compared baseball in the National and American
leagues. He said that American league teams had better defense and
that the National league had better pitching.
