that he was appointing this com
mittee “to study reports of all
previous committees on prison
reform In Georgia.”
By so stating, the Governor
Inferred that at least three ear
lier studies, notably by the Gen
eral Assembly, one by Correc
tions Director Asa Kelley, Jr.,
and another by a prominent Illi
nois specialist In penology, were
politically slanted and unreliable.

ating at the Newton County Hos
pital following surgery on Mon
day, May 20, having entered the
hospital on Friday, May 17. She
is wished an early recovery.

are happy that she has returned
to her home from the Georgia
Baptist Hospital.

Mrs. Henry (Mary) Bowen is
a patient at the Georgia Baptist
Hospital following an accident in
which she suffered a broken hip
at Porterdale on Friday, May
17.

Mrs. Lester Martin will fly
to Raleigh, North Carolina this
week-end to attend the gradua
tion program of Peace College
where Her granddaughter, Miss
Pam Moore, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Obie Moore, of Falls
Church, Virginia will be grad
uated on May 26.

returned to Newton County for
future residence after residing
In Hialeah, Florida for several
years.

Newton Elementary Bands
Presented Concert Tuesday
Newton County Elementary
Bands, under the direction of Ba
sil Rigney and James Bell pre
sented their final concerts for the
school year 1967-68 at the New
ton High Auditorium Tuesday
evening, May 21.
Presented on the program were
the Beginner Band, or fourth
grade students of E. L. Fic
quett School; the Intermediate
Band, students in the fifth and
sixth grade that have been in
the band program for approxi
mately one year and finally the
Cadet Band, which is composed
of students in the elementary
schools of the county through the
eighth grade. The Beginner Band
Is under the direction of Bell
and Rigney, the Cadet Band under
the direction of Bell with the
Intermediate Band being direct
ed by Rigney.
At the conclusion of the
splendid and varied program pre
sented by the three groups the
highlight of the evening was the
presentation of awards to the
Cadet Band members attaining
recognition for their work. Re
ceiving the Rookies of the Year
awards, which was a tie, were
Mike Pinson end Dan Bohanan
with the coveted Band Box Award,
which is the highest award for
an eighth grader, going to Jan-

and is furnished the students
by the band and was a very
needed item in the Cadet Band,

Following the presentation of
the awards members of the eighth
grade, who will go into the Blue
Rambler Band next fall, present
ed Bell with a beautifully decor
ated cake and gifts as a parting
token of appreciation from these
students.
The Blue Rambler Band will
present their concert tonight
(Thursday) at 8 p.m. at the NCHS
auditorium.
