Jaycee Officer Installation
Banquet Held At Elks Club
Newton County Jaycees held
their annual Officer Installation
Banquet Saturday night, May 8,
1968 at the Elks Club. Mr.
William Womack, president for
1967-68, presided and the in
vocation was given by Mr. Jerry
Aldridge.
The banquet was beautifully
decorated with a theme of red,
white and blue. A large floral
arrangement was centered at the
head table with brass candela
bra on either side. On the
wall behind the head table were
two American flags in the center
of the Jaycee banners.
After a delicious dinner, Mr.
Womack welcomed the members
and introduced the special guests
for the banquet and the guest
speaker for the evening, Mr.
Gene Bishop.
Gene is an outstanding Jaycee
and has held every local office
in his club. On his job he Is
the most outstanding salesman
in the U. S. for Avis Rent-a
car. He was National Director
for Jaycees In 1966 and Region
5 Jaycee president 1967. He
was accompanied by his lovely
wife Sue.
Jerry Aldridge, presented the
Speak-Up Jaycee Awards which
were certificates for outstanding
achievement in public speaking.
The awards were presented to
Cliff Rogers, Wayne Hunt, Larry
Newton, Ronald Carter, Randall
Meadows, Fred Harwell, Jerry
Aldridge, R. T. Smith, Jr., Wil
liam Womack, Sonny Gwin and
Bobby Patrick.
R. T. Smith, Internal Vice-
President, presented Spark-Plug
and Spoke Awards for outstanding
participation In the Jaycee club
and activities In the club. Tbe
Spoke Award went to Freddie
Harwell, Bobby Sigman, Nelson
Allen, Sonny Gwin, and Jeff Ben
ton. The Spark-Plug awards
were presented to William Wo
mack, Wayne Hunt, Larry New
ton, Cliff Rogers, Jack Harwell,
Bobby Patrick and R. T. Smith.
Gene Bishop Installed the fol
lowing officers to serve during
the 1968-69 term; President,
Malcolm Kessinger; Internal
Vice-President, Jerry Aldridge;
External Vice-President, Fred
Harwell; Secretary, Jeff Benton;
Treasurer, Larry Newton; Di
rectors Nelson Allen, Jack Loyd,
Cliff Rogers; State Director, Joe
Hughes.
Malcolm Kessinger, Incoming
president, was presented with
the gavel at which time he made
two awards. One award was
presented to Mr. William Wo
mack for recognition for being
outstanding president for the

of yellow and white daisies and
mums flanked by two burning
white tapers In silver candle
sticks.
Presiding over the punch bowl
were Misses Lillian Benton, in
white voile dotted swlss, and Bon
nie Hopkins of Elberton, In a
lime green model, accentuated at
the neckline by a print silk scarf.
Assisting them were Misses
Betty Benton, In a white cotton
eyelet dress, and Eulalia Brown,
in a lime green voile dress
with double breasted effect. Com
pleting the appointments were
silver trays of assorted tea sand
wiches and cookies, with com
potes of mints and toasted pe
cans.
Approximately thirty friends
of the honoree called between the
designated hours, including one
out of town guest, Miss Patricia
Lott of Decatur.
Two Covingtonians
Receive Special
MU Certificates
MACON, Ga.—Mrs. Roy Shiver
and Mrs. Christian Hall Dillard
of Covington were awarded a
Special Mercer Certificate in
closing exercises of the denomi
national Extension program at
Tattnall Square Baptist Church.
To qualify for a Special Certi
ficate a student must complete
24 semester hours of study in
courses prescribed by the Ex
tension Department of Christian
Education of Mercer University.
A total of 37 persons in the
state were so honored.
Covington Chapter 337 Order
of the Eastern Star will meet
tonight at 8 p.m. at the Masonic
Hall. All members are urged
to attend.

the First Baptist Church will
meet Tuesday evening, June 18,
at 7;30 at the home of Mrs.
Fred Lott with Mrs. Rembert
Kitchens and Miss Eleanor Moss
as co-hostesses.
Suburban Club
Met On June 5
Members of the Surburban
Homemakers Club met June 5
at the REA Building. The meeting
opened with Mrs. Harold Luns
ford giving the devotional. Min
utes were then read and roll
called, with two visitors pre
sent.
Mrs. Wilton Cheek presented
the interesting program, “ A Tale
of Shoe Shinery.”

with an "Outstanding President’s Award” for his leadership of
the Jaycees during 1967-1968, which has advanced the Newton
County club into a position of prominence in the community. In

kept the bride’s book at a small
table at the entrance of the home.
A color scheme of yellow and
white was carried out in the de
corations throughout the rooms
where guests gathered for the
happy occasion.
The dining room table was
centered with a three tiered beau
tifully decorated wedding cake
topped with a miniature bride
and groom. Flanking this were
candelabra with burning tapers,
with an arrangement of yellow
roses. Cutting and serving the
cake was Mrs. Frank McElroy,
Jr. of Valdosta, with punch being
served by Mrs. Sarah Irwin and
Miss Sally Irwin of Covington.
For their wedding trip the
bride changed to a lime green
linen sheath with bone accessor
ies and the white rose corsage
lifted from her bridal bouquet.
Following their wedding trip to
Florida Mr. and Mrs. Costley
will make their home in Coving
ton.

PFC Peugh is presently stat
ioned at Fort Louis, Washington
and will be going to Southeast
Asia to serve a year. Mrs.
Peugh will be staying at the home
of her parents in Covington until
