Catfish Prefer Mud
If a man could pick exactly
the right time to go catfishing,
he’d say, “Give me a rising river
and plenty of mud.
For some reason, known only
to the cats themselves, catfish
go on a feeding binge whenever
rains upstream swell the rivers
and cloud the waters with a cur
tain of mud. Take advantage of
this phenomenon, says the fishing
experts at Mercury outboards,
and take home a mess of the
sweetest - tasting fish ever to
grace a platter.
Catfish apparently sense the
abundance of food washed into the
river during periods of rising
waters. They hurry to gorge
themselves before these extra
rations disappear. During the
process, they gobble anything that
appears edible . . . plus a few
other delicacies that would be
difficult for anything but a cat
fish to digest.
Muddy waters encourage cats

ami invade the shoals. This
means that most anywhere you set
out a line you’ll find fish. As
the currents speed up, strikes
are swift and sure, and you’ll
find bait stolen less often.
If waters reach a near-flood

protected spots such as small
tributaries. These areas become
packed with crayfish, insects,

well rewarded.

Don’t Change Baseball!
Many of the proposed new innovations in professional base
ball makes me sick. Several men connected with baseball today
are wanting to make our National Pastime a curcus replete with
comedians who want to make changes in the game.
First of all, what about the baseball record holders who have
their names in the book? Say the pitcher’s mound was moved
back, wouldn’t that allow records to be broken by the whole
sale lot, and would that be fair to pitchers and hitters who made
their records under the present rules?
Now someone this past week proposed that the batter be given
four strikes instead of three. This would be unfair to the old
time baseball stars and their records.
Maybe we’d just as well “leave well enough alone.’’

Can sports make a success of a man? Yes, it can financially.
Take the case of Manuel Benitez of Spain, the most popular bull
fighter now alive. He was once a beggar in the city streets, and
now he is the idol of Spain and worth millions, and richest matador
in history ... It is reported that little James Kerry Evans, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Evans of Covington, has been drafted by
Covington Braves Little League Manager Cliff Rogers. James
Kerry is only a week old. His father is a former LL player and
is now a manager in the local LL . . . Ficquett School Coach L. G.
Carney is again managing the Covington Kiwanis Swimming Pool.
Lt. Lee Campbell, now stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas, won third
place in the recent Juarez, Mexico, golf tournament. Campbell is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Campbell of Covinvton. . . .Six R. L.
Cousins High School athletes have received mere than $24,000 worth
of scholarships for the coming college year. Four will attend Clark
College in Atlanta, and two will attend Delaware State College... .
Begining June 10 the Newton Little League games will begin at 6 p. m.
instead of the present 5:30 p. m.
Goals in soccer are so hard to score that a sports page may
say that one team “clobbers” another if the score is as much as
3-0. . . . Dedication ceremonies for the university of Georgia’s
Frank D. Foley baseball field were held Saturday at Athens
Freeman Batchelor, one of the varsity members of the 1964 Ram
football team (9-1 record) is now in the armed services and sta
tioned at Lackland AFB in Texas at the present time Southern
California’s baseball team is making its 11th appearance in the
NCAA tourney at Omaha, Nebraska.
Atlanta Chiefs Soccer team deserves a pat on the back for
their 3-2 victory over Manchester City of England at the Stadium
last week. The Manchester team is champ of Great Britain .. .
Newton athletes getting sports scholarships for next fall include
Richard Allen to Truett McConnell (basketball), Terry Schell to
Oglethorpe, and Phil Shaw to University of Tenn, (golf). . . Could
this be an election preview? The Republican baseball team of
Congress defeated the Democratic team last week at DC Stadium
14-1 .. . Anyday now, Eddie Mathews of Detroit is expected to
go ahead of Mel Ott in the home run listing. Ott banged a career
high of 511.

Georgia Signs
6-8 Illinois
Cage Star
ATHENS—Randy Mateling,6-8
two-time all-state Illinois high
school selection, has accepted
a basketball grant-in-aid to the
University of Georgia, announced
Bulldog Coach Ken Rosemond
Wednesday.
Mateling received over 700
letters from college representa
tives interested in him during the
past school year. He narrowed
his choice to only five schools:
Kansas, Indiana, Bradley, Louis
ville and Georgia.
He chose Georgia for several
reasons, chiefly: (1) the Bull
dog’s rise to prominence as a
Dixie basketball power and their
impressive facilities in the Geor
gia Coliseum; (2) Georgia’s na
tionally renowned Art Depart
■ ment, headed by the distinguished
Lamar Dodd. Mateling plans to
study commercial art (advertis
ing) at Georgia.
Incidentally, the Georgia
freshman team for the coming
1968-69 season will be the larg
est in Bullpup annals. In addi
tion to Mateling at 6-8, also
signed are Rod Jacobs, 6-4 1/2,
Sterling, 111.; Pat McCabe, 6-5,
New Lenox, Ill.; Kevin Las, 6-9,
Joliet, 111., and Dick Toth,
