Coach Crowell Praises His Winning Athletes
PORTERDALE- “Be SOME
BODY”, challenged B. C. Crow
ell, addressing his outstanding
young athletes at the Twentieth
Annual Awards Banquet on
Thursday, May 23, at the Por
terdale Hotel. “Go to Newton
High, get with your books, and
try to do w’hat your teachers ask
you to do,” he urged emphati
cally.
Twenty years as the same
coach in a small American com
munity with the support of a cor
poration like the Bibb Manufac
turing Company caused the coach
to become sentimental as he
spoke from his heart to “his boys
and girls.”
Words of appreciation were ap
propriately given to parents,
players, and Jerry Aldridge,
principal of Porterdale Junior
High School. Mr. Crowell thanked
the Bibb Manufacturing Company
for its concern, equipment, co
operation, and sponsorship
through M. B. Shaw, General Su
perintendent of the Porterdale
Division.
Words of encouragement were
given personally to every indi
vidual honored at this banquet,
which executed the school col
ors of purple and gold.
Both basketball teams had un
defeated seasons. Some of the
eighth grade boys had also
played on the team last season,
which never won a game. With
the 1967-1968 record a “first”
in Junior High history, it was
particularly noteworthy that on
ly one home game was on their
schedule.

But what about fish ponds?
Did you know the addition of lime

If you have been following a

chances are you need to add
lime. A large number of ponds

However, to definitely deter

In the soil, as you may know,
are determined by measuring the
pH. But pH measurements in
ponds normally are not a re

these measurements vary ac

reliable test.
For maximum fertilization re

should be around 20 parts per

are far below this. But the ad

water hardness to a desired le
vel. There are two types of
lime that can be used in ponds—
builder’s or hydrated lime and
agricultural lime. The amount
that should be applied varies
from pond to pond, but as a
general rule a ton of agricul
tural lime or 100 pounds of
builder’s lime per surface acre
will give the desired results.
Builder’s lime should give al
most immediate results. But it
lasts only a couple of months,
so periodic applications during
the year are necessary. For
this reason, agricultural lime
should also be added. This
type of lime provides good re
sults from one to three or more
years, depending primarily upon
the amount of water flowing
through the pond.
Should you desire to have your
pond checked for lime needs,
contact your county Extension
agent, Soil Conservation Service
representative or the State Game
and Fish Commission office
nearest you. They will also be
able to provide additional in
formation on liming fish ponds.
