Mrs. Guy Jones
Mrs. Guy Jones passed away
suddenly at her home In New
born on Monday, June 10. A
native of Newton County she was
72 years old and a member
of Newborn Methodist Church
and the WSCS of the church.
Miss Mae, as she was known
to everyone, was well known for
her philanthropic deeds and her
desire to help her fellow man.
She and Mr. Jones celebrated
their 50th Wedding Anniversary
on April 18. 1967. She was

Surviving are her husband, Guy
Jones of Newborn; two daughters,
Mrs. Gray IDnton, Newborn; Mrs.
Mark Chamberlain, Atlanta; one
grandson, Jack Chamberlain and
one great-granddaughter, Sallie
Chamberlain, both of Atlanta.
Funeral services were con
ducted Tuesday afternoon, June
11, at Newborn Methodist Church
with Rev. Charles R. Williams
and Rev. E. Owen Kellum, Jr.
officiating. Interment was in
Newborn Cemeterv with Caldwell
and Cowan Funeral Home in
charge of arrangements. Ser
ving as pallbearers were Owen
Malcolm, Roy Malcolm, Marvin
Malcolm, Hulon Adams, Thad
Jones, Charles Jones, Walker
Robinson, Charles Robinson.
Dovid W. Martin
David W. (Swipe) Martin of
Route 1, Covington passed away
at his home on Monday, June 10,
after a short illness. A native of
Newton County he was 65 years
old and a member of Grace Bap
tist Church. He was self employed
as a taxi operator and for many
years was an employee of Bibb
Manufacturing Company at Por
terdale.
Funeral services were held at
Grace Baptist Church on Wed
nesday afternoon, June 12, with
Rev. Bill Cagle and Rev. L. D.
Swords officiating. Interment was
in Baptist Cemetery at Porter
dale with Caldwell and Cowan Fu
neral Home in chargeofarrange
ments. Serving as pallbearers
were Cecil Smallwood, J. D.
Smallwood, Donovan Smallwood,
James Clegg, Paul Clegg and
Ellie Coady.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
David Martin, Covington; two
sons, Bobby Martin, Porterdale;
Jimmy Martin, daughters, Mrs.
Darlene Stewart, Mrs. Betty Ke
well, Mrs. Charlotte Wilson,
Mrs. Pat Lazenby, all of Coving
ton; brothers, Leonard Harper,
Thomaston; J. D. Harper, Bar
nesville; sisters, Mrs. Essie Au
tman, Mrs. Dessa Huckaby, both
of Thomaston; Mrs. Ida Mae
Watson, Butler and 11 grand
children.
J. Roger Townley
J. Roger Townley of Oxford
passed away suddenly Tuesday,
June 11, at the age of 47. A
native of Newton County he was
a member of Walnut Grove Bap
tist Church and was self em
ployed as a grading contractor.
Funeral services will be con
ducted today (Thursday) June 13,
at 4 o’clock at Walnut Grove
Baptist Church with Rev. James
P. West, Jr., pastor of the chu
rch, and Rev. Marcus Drake
officiating. Interment will be
in Sardis Cemetery near Oxford,
with J. C. Harwell and Son Fun
eral Home in charge.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Sara Ruth Townley, sons, Sidney
W. Denny, Covington; James Ro
ger Townley, Damon Claude
Townley, daughters, Miss Ram
ona Townley, Miss Toreitha

The Brickstore Home Econom
ics Club will meet Wednesday,
June 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the

stian Service of Newborn Church
met Wednesday afternoon at the
church. Mrs. T. W. Binford, pre
sident , called the meeting to or
der. After the singing of “Give
Os Your Best To The Master,”
a prayer followed.
Mrs. Hugh Adams read the
minutes of the last meeting in
the absence of the secretary,
Mrs. R. D. Murrelle. Mrs. W.
R. Porter collected dues and gave
a report. The officers were read
for the new year. The group voted
Cathy Callaway Tapped For
Mortar Board At Georgia
Miss Cathy Callaway, the dau
ghter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L.
Callaway of Covington, has been
tapped for Mortar Board, the
highest honor that a woman can
attain at The University of Geor
gia. Thirteen junior women were
chosen for Mortar Board on qual
ifications of scholarship, leader
ship, and service.
Miss Callaway has just com
pleted her junior year at the
University and has made an out
standing record in her three
years at college. She has par
ticipated in the following activi
ties: Freshman Camp; Fresh
man Camp Counselor; Vice-Pre
sident-Alpha Lambda Delta; Pre

at the Lions Club Pavilion Wed
nesday, June 19th from 5:30 till

The Covington-Newton County
Chamber of Commerce recently
compiled a small billfold size
Membership Roster card for
members of that civic organi
zation. C of C President Bill
Hoffman stated that the roster
now makes it more convenient
to seek new members whose
names are not on the roster list.
At present there are 118 mem
bers of the Covington-Newton
County Chamber of Commerce.

Bellairs As Speaker

met at 7;30 p.m. on May 27
at the church. Mrs. Vivian Nail
presided over the meeting.
Mrs. Lucille Ray opened the
meeting with prayer. Mrs. Joe
W. Allgood, secretary, read the
minutes of the last meeting, af
ter which Mrs. John Clegg,
treasurer, gave the treasurer’s
report and gave each member
a pledge card to complete. A list
was compiled to send cards to
shut-ins and bereaved families.
The circle counts were as fol
lows; Annie Lummus 9, Ethel
Belcher 6, and the Lucilles 1.
The Annie Lummus and Ethel
Belcher Circles will meet at the
church in June. The Lucilles will
meet at the Porter Place.

vice. Mrs. Bellairs lit the four
candles, one for each of the fol
lowing: humility, service, mercy
and compassion.
To conclude the service each
member brought their pledge
card to the alter. The meeting
was closed with prayer.
