prior to which Rev. White of
fered the invocation, Secretary
Hays extended a gracious wel
come to those present, gave some
interesting highlights on the Or
der of Masonry; and stated that
if a member lived the teachings
of Masonry, his life would re
flect these teachings, without be
nefit of emblems to identify him
as a Mason. He then introduced
Harry Tice, Sunshine Man of the
Grand Lodge, who was accorded
the privilege of presenting vi
sitors, and the evening’s speaker.
Mr. James expressed pleasure
in attending the Mansfield Lod
ge’s Family Night; and the com
pensations he had known in his
associations with Masons and ci
tizens of this section. He con
gratulated Mansfield’s splendid
community spirit, which payed
tribute to its people. He paus
ed in his comments to recognize
H. Stoney Hays, and lead the
group in singing "Happy Birth
day” to him, upon the occasion
of his 81st birthday. Mr. Hays
in responding, assured those pre
sent that this had been the hap
piest birthday of his whole 81
years, and that the evening was
a wonderful climax of the day.
Tom Loveless, Bth District Ju
nior Deacon, of Eatonton, who
was recognized, from Rising Star
Lodge #4, announced the 150th
Anniversary of the Lodge to be
observed at a banquet at Rock
Eagle, Wednesday October 16,
when Past Grand Master Joseph
A. Moore will speak; and an Bth
District meeting at Bowman, on
Nov. 21, at which the new Grand
Master of Georgia, Durwood
Mercer, will speak.
Mr. James encouraged fam
ilies of Masons to lend consi
deration and cooperation to a
Mason in the work of his Lodge.
Pursuing this thought, he remin
ded his hearers that Masonry
was the oldest fraternal organi
zation in existence; and was based
upon codes of kindness, consid
eration and helpfulness as set up
by artisans of the 16th and 17th
centuries, who lived lifetimes
constructing the famous cathe
drals of that era.
"Masonry”, he stated, "Is not
a religion, but its teachings are
religious, and based upon the
teachings of Jesus; both of wh
ich seek to build better men.

Layson Receives 50-Year Masonic Pin
MR. J. HENRY LAYSON is shown, (R), as he was congratulated by Grand Lodge Sr. High Deacon Ralph
James," who presented him with a 50 Year Certificate and Pin, which Mrs. Layson, center, had been
accorded the priviledge of pinning.
And a man who lives up to these
teachings will be a better man,
better son, husband and fath
er”. He urged Masons to take
seriously the obligation of hel
ping select the right leaders as
heads of our government. The
discipline of clean living, and
implementing the teachings of
Christ and the goals of Mason
ry, will lead Masons to man’s
deepest satisfaction - living with
in the Will of God; and lead us
to set the right examples for our
"Now” generation, he concluded.
At the conclusion of his mes
sage, Mr. James recognized Olin
Fincher and Charlie Henderson,
of Mansfield Lodge, who were
presented with Certificates of
Proficiency in Masonic Instruc
tional Work; and John Henry
Layson was signally honored in
