EDA Planning
Continues In
Northeast Ga.
Approval of a $50,200 grant to
help continue planning for growth
in a nine-county area of Georgia
was announced today by the Eco
nomic Development Administra
tion, U. S. Department of Com
merce.
The Northeast Georgia Area
Planning and Development Com
mission of Athens is the app
licant for the Federal assistance.
The organization is the official
planning agency for the North
east Georgia Economic Devel
opment District, which was off
icially designated by EDA on
April 10, 1967.
Counties in the district are
Barrow, Clarke, Greene, Jack
son, Madison, Morgan, Oconee,
Oglethorpe and Walton.
The Idea of the multi-county
district program is to encourage
counties to pool their talents and
resources to overcome economic
problems that cross county lines.
A district must include at least
two lagging counties, designated
by EDA as redevelopment areas,
and may also include economica
lly healthy counties. It must
also include a growth center—
a community of not more than
250,000 persons which can con
tribute to the development of
the lagging areas.
The qualified redevelopment
areas in the Northeast District
are Greene, Morgan and Ogle
thorpe counties. Athens is the
growth center for the district.
The district will provide
$17,710 to meet the $67,910 cost
of continuing the program for a
year.
The district’s staff conducts
research, planning, counseling
and promotional activities and
works with other local, State and
Federal development programs
in the area.
