Friends Count With Miss Grace Altman
By Sara McGinty
“I’d rather have friends than
a million dollars.”
When Miss Grace Altman of
Porterdale makes that statement,
you believe her. If you make a
trite remark like “Real friends
are rare,” she won’t agree with
you because she counts hers by
the dozen.
Miss Grace hasn’t collected
her friends over the years by
belonging to clubs and organi
zations and going out to mix
and mingle with a lot of people.
Her friends come to her because
she has been confined to a wheel
chair for the past eight years,
following a series of accidents
that left her with broken legs
each time.
The Bibb retlrant’s small wh
ite house In the heart of Porter
dale Is such a busy place at ti
mes, It has been compared with
Grand Central Station. Small
children, on the way home from
school, stop by to see Miss Gr
ace. Bibb women getting off
early from work and having to
wait for rides home, go and wait
with Miss Grace. Neighbors drop
in with plates of food when they
have cooked something especially
good they think Miss Grace will
enjoy.
And there are certain regular
visitors she expects on certain
days of the week or month. Am
ong these are two young sixth
graders, Kathy Hardigree and
Lynn Head who come every Fri
day to get Miss Grace’s gro
cery list and do her shopping for
her. There is social worker

Mae Hardman who comes on a
certain day every month (as well
as days between) to get her
utility bills and pay them for her.
There is Lewis Caldwell who
helps Miss Grace with business
matters and is referred to as
her “legal adviser.” There Is
the Rev. Harold Lyda of Porter
dale Methodist Church (although
Miss Grace is a Baptist) who
comes regularly to visit and hold
little prayer services. There
Is Mrs. Vivian Owens of Coving
ton, a cousin and also a Bibb
retirant, who checks frequently
to see If there are heavy clean
ing jobs to be done about the
house that she can take care of
and shopping she can do. There
is Bibb Vice President Hugh M.
Comer who stops by when he Is in
Porterdale. And many more.
The visitor is always rewarded
with the warmest welcome pos
sible. “I wish I could express
appreciation as well as she
does,” says one.
Actually, Miss Grace Is very
independent. In her home she can
do everything necessary for her
self, maneuvering her wheelchair
with ease. Doing a small space
at a time and using two mops,
she can clean her floors until
they are spotless. She has had
her ceiling lights dropped on a
long cord so that she can reach
them to change light bulbs. Cook
ing, dish washing and dusting are
no problem.
Grace Altman was born on a
farm not far from Covington and
moved with her parents to Por
terdale in 1917. Her father,
the late John James Altman,
went to work for Bibb and helped
Install machinery In the Osprey
plant while it was under const
ruction. Her mother, the late
Mrs. Lillie Altman, was also a
Bibb employee. Grace went to
work for Bibb when she was 18,
first Inspecting yarn at Porter
dale and later working In Pack
ing and Shipping. Sie was In
her 37th year with the company
when she retired because of her
health.
“I remember Papa used to ca
rry a lantern when we went to
work,” she says. “That was
mostly to keep out of the mud.
We didn’t have sidewalks or st
reet lights then. I remember
when they first turned the street
lights on. it was on Thanksgi
ving night—J forget the year.
Mama said, ‘We’ve sure got so
mething to be thankful for now’.”
Although Porterdale now has
four handsome church buildings,
there were none in those days.
Grace attended Methodist ser
vices In the school building and
Baptist services in the old buil
ding near the present Commu
nity House. In those days Gr
ace belonged to a group called
the Business Girls’ Club. She
wore her skirts at what is now
called midi-length and was one of
the first in the community to
“bob” her hair. Her skirts
are only a little shorter now and
her white hair is still short and
softly curled.
Add to the list of visitors at
the Altman home a procession
of stray cats who can always
count on a hand-out and two

First 6 Months
Critical For
Aged In Homes
The Major Crisis for a person
in a home for the aged comes
within the first six months of
entering the institution, reports
a psychiatrist at the University
of Chicago. He said a recent
study showed that 24 per cent
of institutionalized persons died
within the first six months,
whereas only 10 per cent of
those awaiting entrance but still
living in a community setting
died during the same period.
In addition to those who died,
approximately 25 per cent of the
other recently admitted persons
had serious physiological or psy
chological problems. Old people
who pass the six-month mark,
he said, appear to be as well
adjusted as the elderly who live
in the general community.
