During Highway Week
The opening of Highway Week,
1968, throughout Georgia and the
nation finds a total of
$37,947,296.89 in road construc
tion and improvement projects
now underway in the Tennille
Highway Field Division, acc
ording to Field Division Eng
ineer Earl L. Tyre.
Mr. Tyre said that the pur
pose of National fflghway Week
is to focus attention on the imp
ortance of highways and highway
construction to the state and
nation, and to spotlight the road
builders’ efforts to provide in
creased savings in lives, time
and money for the motoring public
through highway construction,
improvements, and maintenance.
“Perhaps the highway engineer

the continuing and growing need
for such improvements. We

leadership, resolution and
personal courage guided us
to victory and to peace.
“Following World War 11,
he served as the first Su
preme Allied Commander of
the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization forces in Eu
rope and demonstrated an
unrivaled capacity to create
a united military organiza
tian.
“During eight years as
President of the United
States, he enhanced his repu
tation as a leader of nations;
a program of lasting interna
tional cooperation was in
augurated in his administra
tion.
“General Eisenhower is
recognized as one of the most

also realize that public under
standing and support is ess
ential if we are to continue a
road building effort that has cut
driving time and costs and made
each mile driven three times
as safe, statistically, in less than
30 years,” Mr. Tyre said.
He summarized some of the
road projects now underway in
the Tennille Division, including:
51 Miles of Grading, Paving
and Bridges on Interstate Route
20 between Atlanta and Augusta
at a contract cost of
$18,669,446.18.
This 51 miles, together with
the 47 miles of Interstate 20
already completed in this Divis
ion, leaves only 28 miles of this
route in Greene, Taliaferro and
Warren Counties which has not,
as yet, been placed under con
tract.
53 Miles of Grading, Paving
and Bridges on Federal Aid Pri
mary Routes in the Division at
a contract cost of $7,021,898.21.
54 Mlles of similar construc
tion on Federal Aid Secondary
Routes in the Division at a cost
of $2,194,515.64.
644 Miles of miscellaneous
State, Authority Type and County
Contracts at a cost of
$9,600,959.91.
In addition to work under com
mercial and county contracts,
State Highway Maintenance For
ces have, this construction
season, accomplished major re
pairs, resurfacing and other
maintenance projects including
bridge repairs, painting, etc.,
totaling 131 miles at a cost of
$460,476.95.
Noting that the nationwide
theme of Highway Week this year
is “Highways are for People”
and Georgia’s Highway Week pos
ter proclaims “At Your Service”
with a highway forming the “S”,
Mr. Tyre said:
“Some of these projects will
benefit thousands of PEOPLE
each day. Some will serve only
a relative few by comparison,
but the need is equally important
to the Individuals Involved in
each case.”
“The dollar volume of work
now underway in the 28 counties
of the Tennille Division gives
an idea of the size of today’s
highway program. It also points
up the fact that highway building
Is in Itself a major industry
as well as an asset to other
business activity. For example,
this Division has a total annual
payroll of $6,132,729.12. The
Division Headquarters complex
is equivalent to a small comm
ercial industry; and every main
tenance barn and residency office
makes a sizable contribution to
Its area’s economy”, Mr. Tyre
concluded.
