August Highway Carnage
Slaughter on the highways reached an all-time high during
August, and the nation paid a record price for its carelessness,
the Insurance Information Institute reported last week.
The death toll totaled s,2Bo—highest ever for a single month.
In addition, an 1.1.1. survey of representative state traffic
accident reports indicated that the number of accidents during
August rose 16.7 per cent above August 1967 and that traffic
injuries for the month were up 7.9 per cent over the same
month a year ago.
These grim facts produced an estimated economic loss of
$1,539,088,000—m0re than any other single month.
The August economic loss is £540 million higher than the
total for August of 1967 and some $274 million higher than
the figure for July 1968.
The August figure brings the total economic loss for the
firgt eight months of 1968 to $£9,209,643,000. This is $1.3
billion more than the loss of $7,909,790,000 suffered during
the first eight months of 1967. It seems certain that the total
loss during 1968 also will reach a record high, the 1.1.1. said.
Estimated economic loss figures, the Institute said, include
such factors as lost wages, medical expenses, property damage
and the service costs of insurance. While the losses are paid
for largely through insurance companies, it was pointed out
that the ultimate cost falls upon those who pay insurance
premiums.
