On frosty days, be sure to
clear any ice that may have
collected on the windshield or
windows of your automobile, so
that you will have a clear vi-
sion of the road when you step
behind the wheel, the American
Insurance Association cautions,
Winter driving is fraught with
enough hazards -- what with icy
roads and snow and sleet often
to contend with, Don’t add to
the danger.

Cold Weather Camping
By Dr. Zachary Taylor, Jr.
FEconomics Department

Camping is one of the fastest
growing activities of this gener=
ation. People camp for avariety
of reasons—from a desire to get
away, even if for a short period
of time, from their ordinary rout
ine to a love for the out-of=
doors. Camping canbe most pri
mitive, consisting merely of
sleeping=-out under the stars, Or
it can be the most luxurious live
ing = in in an expensive motor
home. Most campers restrict
themselves to the spring or sum=-
mer, but as noted in a previous
article more campers are trying
the experience of fall camping.
However, there is yet another
season in which one finds very
few campers out in the woods.
Winter camping can be a uni=-
que experience for those who
consider themselves hardy
enough to attempt it,
To fully appreciate your fa=-
vorite campsite it should be seen
at different times of the year.
One sees things he didn’t see at
other seasons. That favorite lake
presents adifferent picture. That
beautiful vista unfolds new
charms,
Winter camping requires more
planning than camping in other
seasons., But planning that isri
gid can be fatal, Planning with
flexibility is plain common sense.
Weather is unpredictable for
more than a day or two atatime.
The weekend scheduled for the
camping trip may be one in which

a blizzard develops, and the tem=
perature drops below zero,
The woods can be beautiful
after a snow, but disastrous du
ring the snowstorm. A nip in
the air can be exhilerating, but
exceedingly cold temperatures
can be killing, During extreme
conditions, the ordinary camper
should leave the woods to the
most experienced, skilled and ad
venturous souls who may have to
be out in this kind of weather.
Given the necessity of using
common sense and accepting the
possibility of having to cancel
plans, the next prerequisite is
the proper mental attitude. Snow
within proper limits can be fun.
Except for extremely low tem=
peratures, cold canbe coped with.
Developing an approach which
avoids foolhardiness on the one
hand and fright on the other be=-
comes anecessity. Common sen=

should consider the hazards to
himself, his companions, and
those who might have to set off
on a rescue mission,
Warm clothing and sleeping
bags play an important role in
maintaining comfort. Oddly
enough, some people may be
tempted to dress too warmly.
During the day, if one is active
he is perspiring even in the
dead of winter. If he has on
very heavy clothing, the moisture
has no way to dissipate. One
then can get over-chilled, The
ideal would be to wear several
layers of clothing which can be
adjusted to body conditions. This
would also have the advantage of

Winter camping also requires
the proper food in order to pro=-
vide body fuel for warmth, The
terms ‘‘warm clothing?”’ and
‘‘warm sleeping bags’’ are mis
nomers, Clothes do not warm
one—~yather one warms himself,
Thus the greater importance of
proper food during winter camp

summer,
With the approach of winter,
campers should be making plans

The Bible
He put a new song in my
mouth.—(Psalms 40:3).
Our happiness comes from
God. By surrendering our
thoughts and feelings to God,
we prepare the way for hap
piness. As we center our
mind, our heart, our emotions
in Him His Spirit so fills our
thinking and feeling that we
cannot fail to be conscious of
His joyous uplift.
