Has Its First Reunion Here
The Elks Club formed the set
ting for the reunion of the New
ton County High School graduating
class of 1953, as they observed
their 15th reunion of the grad
uating class In their first gath
ering.
As guests arrived with their
husbands, wives or dates, they
were greeted by Misses Rachel
King and Charlotte Rogers and

Members Os The Newton County High School Class Os 1953 Held A Reunion At The Elks Club
Bob Hill, who presented them
with name tags. Former class
mates enjoyed an informal per
iod of greeting old friends and
catching up on happenings of the
past years.
A delicious buffet supper was
enjoyed with the tables holding
decorations In the school colors
of blue and white. Candles with
Newton penants and figurines of
football players and megaphones
decorated the mantel above the
fireplace with Its glowing logs.
Bob Hill was In charge of the
program following the meal. He
presented Shermer Alford, who
gave a most Interesting talk on
his days In the wilderness, and
now his return to reside in Geo
rgia. He said he had found no
place to compare with Covington
and Georgia. He commended Bob
Hill for his work In planning and
carrying out the reunion of the
class and asked everyone to stand
in recognition to him for bringing
the class together again.
Hill gave a short history of
the class which was made up of
92 graduates. Os this number
78 live in Georgia, with 33 resid
ing In Newton County and only 11
of those locally attended. Tw
enty-eight members of the class
live in Metro Atlanta area, 15
out of state and two are in for
eign countries. There were 123
children represented by the 59
attending. Ten of the faculty
members were present for the
enjoyable occasion.
During the presentation of
“awards” Mrs. Kathryn (Farr)
Greer was presented with a pair
of ear plugs for having the most
children; Rachel King, Charlotte
Rogers and Charles Haggard
were presented marriage license
applications for being the only
single members of the class.
Peggy (Day) Ward and Mans Ru
ssell were given road maps, as
they had traveled the greatest
distance, both now living In Co
lumbia, South Carolina.
Each member of the class was
asked to stand and present his
or her wife or husband, and tell
how many children they had and
something of what they were now
doing. Plans were started for
a reunion to be held on the 20th
anniversary and thanks were ex
tended to Jim Bowie and Billy
Kitchens for securing the Elks
Club building for the anniversary
reunion.
Following the program the
group enjoyed dancing to the
music of the Dixie Swlngettes and
getting re-acqualnted with mem
bers of the class and their hus
bands and wives.
Mayor’s Motorcade,
Tree Lighting At
Milledgeville, Wed.
The City of Covington will again
participate this year in the annual
Mayors’ Motorcade to Central
State Hospital at Milledgeville.
The visit to Central State will
take place on December 11.
A Christmas tree lighting ce
remony on the lawn of the Gov
ernor’s Mansion, will be held
at 8:00 p.m. on December 10 to
commemorate the annua! motor
cade, which Is In its tenth year.
The event is sponsored by Geo
rgia Municipal Association. Ac
cording to Sylvester Mayor, Tho
mas W. Lawhorne, Chairman of
GMA’S Mental Health Committee,
last year’s event resulted in ar
ound 40,000 gifts being collected
for Central state Hospital,
Gracewood state School and Hos
pital, and Southwestern state
Hospital.
Mayor Lawhorne said, "We
are making a special effort this
year to encourage more cities
to participate In this worthy ev
ent. This program is one of the
best ways I know for Georgia
citizens to show the state’s men
tal patients that they are nor
forgotten.” While the Munici
pal Associations is officially sp
onsoring only the program at
Milledgeville, gifts collected will
also be distributed to Gracewood
State School and Hospital near
Augusta, and to Southwestern St
ate Hospital in Thomasville.
Mayor Harris urges all citi
zens of Covington to participate
by providing gifts suitable for
either children or adults. He
asks that all gifts be brought to
City Hall prior to December 11.
Wrapped packages should be lab
eled as to their contents, and In
clude the name and address of the
donor.
