Good Sportsmanship
Dear Newton County fans,
Spirit and good sportsmanship go hand in
hand. Although our basketball season has
just begun, we have already shown that the
Newton fans have the greatest and most
enthusiastic spirit of any fans anywhere. We
have also exemplified good sportsmanship,
but it is not quite as enthusiastic as our
spirit. Throwing various articles on the
gym floor, booing, and stomping our feet on
the floor does not help our teams, or our
image.
Certainly, our Rams want to be cheered,
but they want their fans to cheer for them,
not against the opposition or the officials.
We should make the other teams and their
fans feel welcome in our gym, eventhough
we are beating them on the court and in
the stands.
We know our Rams are No. 1, so let’s
make it known that our fans are also No. 1
in spirit and good sportsmanship.
Sincerely,
N.C.H.S. Student Council

Comparative Scores!
Comparing scores of college football teams may not prove much
this day and time, but it is a means of guessing how much your fa
vorite team could beat another club.
Take the case of Georgia’s 10-10 tie with Houston, and then take
Houston beating Tulsa 100-6, and Tulsa’s 23-7 win over Wichita
State and that would make Georgia’s Bulldogs 110 points better
than Wichita State. Here’s another comparative score: Georgia
beat Auburn 17-3, Auburn beat Miami 31-6, Miami beat LSU 31-0.
Does that make Georgia 70 points better than LSU? Well, anyhow,
it makes interesting reading!
** * *
Coach John Heisman, for whom the famous Heisman Trophy
is named, not only coached at Georgia Tech but he coached at
Auburn from 1885-1899. . .The Andrew Autrys of Oxford may be
pulling for the Louisiana State University team in the Peach Bowl
on December 30. Prof, and Mrs. Autry and family (Lee and Dan)
spent the summer at LSU working on his doctoral degree. They
know many of the LSU footbaH players personally. . .Harry Mehre,
former Georgia Bulldog coach of football, now writes a column for
12 Southern newspapers. He is also a panel member of “Foot
baU Review” on TV.
The Bulldogs Saturday at Athens pulled off one of the longest
sustained drives for a TD that has been seen on Sanford Field for
many years. They went 98 yards in 16 plays in the first period
against Georgia Tech. . .Coach Ken Rosemond’s Georgia Bulldogs
may add the second SEC crown at Athens within the year. His cage
team will be among the top clubs come March.. .Coach Bud Carson
of Ga. Tech says that “Vince Dooley has his best team at Georgia
in five years. And, I have seen them all.”
Tile University of Missouri football team and fans will headquarter
on Jekyll Island for the Gator Bowl football game at Jacksonville,
Dec. 28. More than 500 Missourians are expected at Jekyll for the
Gator Bowl weekend. . .Florida Coach Ray Graves’ scalp may not be
so easy to get as some people may think. His team beat both Florida
State and Miami this past season and both of those are arch-rival
state teams. . .Both coaches Norman Van Bricklin of the Falcons
and John McKay of Southern California were teammates at Oregon.
Among the sports fans present for the Newton High opening games
Friday night in Covington were Tim Christian, Auburn’s fine split
end, and the Atlanta Falcons’ Rick Eber, a former end at Tulsa Uni
versity. .. .Statistics are now showing that college teams are running
some 10 to 15 more plays per game this year due to the clock stopping
when the ball changes from defense to offense. . . .CoHege scouts
in Georgia are already watching basketbaHer Robert (Peanuts) Mur
phy of GreenviHe. He is 6-2 and is presently averaging 38 points a
game.
Just how many games do you think Georgia would have lost this
year if it had not been for the fine all-around play of QB Mike Ca
van and Kent Lawrence? Cavan’s passing and running was great, and
the pass-catching and running of Lawrence was most valuable to the
team. And, come to think of it, neither will make All-American as
have BHI Stanfill and Jake Scott. .Southeastern Conference teams
fared very well against outsiders in football games this past season.
The SEC schools had a record of 32-10-5.
Football fans who plan to attend the Sugar Bowl game in New Or
leans will have to make hotel or motel reservations for a minimum
of three days. This year New Orleans should be jampacked for the
first time in many years. . .Two members of the Atlanta Braves
overloaded staff apparently were expendable. First it was Jerry
Sachs, and now Jim Faszholz who have taken other jobs. Neither
has a replacement as yet . .Avondale’s Calvin Ramsey, football
coach, has lost only one game at the Avondale field in 10 years.
That was last September to Forest Park 14-7.
Would you believe that the Tech-Georgia game was played in
Atlanta for 14 straight years? It was, from 1900 until 1915.. .
The Covington NEWS’ Harmon Football Forecast had a winning
average of .770% for the year. That is an exceUent average on more
than 1,800 games picked during the season.. .Jimmy Tingle (Head
land High) and Fred Jones (Tucker) are members of the West
Georgia College cage team this season. Both played their first
two college years at Middle Georgia.
The Atlanta Braves will open the home baseball season on Mon
day, April 7, 1969, against the San Francisco Giants.. .Many have
wondered why Houston has not been invited to a bowl game this
season. They are on the NCAA ineligible list. . .Friends of Ga.
Tech’s Bobby Dodd have given him a new Buick again this season,
just as they have for the past 19 years.
