300th Victory Not Far Off
When the 1968-69 Newton High basketball season started Coach
Ronald Bradley had a record of 284 wins in 10 seasons as the
Ram coach. If the Rams continue unbeaten this season he would
net his 300th victory at Pike County on January 25. But, in be
tween now and that Jan. 25th date, there are some tough opponents.
For instance, the game with Murray County at Chatsworth on Jan.
4, and the two teams this weekend-Stephens County and Woodward
Academy.
Are Quarterbacks No. 1?
In evaluating a college football team, should the quarterback be
your Number 1 man? Many cases can be given to prove that point.
Where would Georgia be this New Years if it had not been for Mike
Cavan? Or take the case of Ole Miss without Archie Manning? Or
Florida State without Bill Cappieman?
In each instance these ball-handlers have had greatyears and thus
their teams are in (or have been) in major bowls this season.

Bobby Dews is the new baseball coach at Tampa University
(Fla.). Dews was a teammate of Gerald (Jabbo)’ Autry when both
Georgians were at Daytona Beach in the Pittsburgh Pirate chain. ..
Former Newton High golfer Jody Webb is now a student at Samford
University in Birmingham, Aja. A co-ed at the college is Joy
Carol Christmas. Seems as if all she needed to do was sign a
card with her actual name. . .Tickets to the Peach Bowl game in
Atlanta Monday (Dec. 30) are stiH available by writing to the Peach
Bowl, P. 0. Box 1336, Atlanta, Ga. Tickets are $6 each.
^Charlie Burnett and Don Helm, local high school football officials
Have been elected to Dixie Football Officials Assn, offices. Burnett
vtas named first vice-president, and Helm was named to the ex
esutive committee representing umpires in the association. . .
Andy Howell and Jim Allen were named as Honorable Mentions
in the State AA football team selected by The Atlanta Journal
Sunday. Howell is a tackle and Allen is a back.
.-.The Georgia Bulldogs signed five quarterbacks to scholarships
fpr the freshman team of next fall. A distinguishing feature about all
five is that no one stands less than 6 ft. tall. . .Those people who
iisrve no trouble separating the men from the boys are called
w^men. . .Alabama, who will appear in the Gator Bowl against Mis
soui on December 28 at Jacksonville, has made more trips to the
Rose Bowl than any other college (six). However, Ohio State will
make it six this next January 1.

BOWL GAMES BRING OUT INTERESTING POINTS
—The Kickoff published in Chattanooga, Tenn., dug up some in
teresting statistics this week in regard to teams engaging in the
January 1 bowl tilts. Os the eight teams in the four games on that
day, none has lost more than one game this past seascs. That has
happened only once before, in 1940.
In 1940 the teams in the Rose, Sugar, Orange and Cotton bowls
were (in order): Stanford and Nebraska, Boston College and Ten
nessee, Mississippi State and Georgetown, and Texas A&M and
Fordham.
Here are the records of the teams in the New Years games of
1969:
Georgia (8-0-2) vs Arkansas (9-1-0)
.. Ohio State (9-0-0) vs Sou. Calif. (9-0-1)
\ Tennessee (,8-l-l}vs Texas (8-1-1)
Penn. State (10-0-0) vs Kansas(9-l-0)
