Maddox Credits Carnegie
Course For His Success
ATLANTA (GPS) — Gov. Les
ter G. Maddox isn’t a full-time
salesman for the Dale Carnegie
Course, but he likely would be
leading the organization’s sales
force if he ever decided to ac
cept such a job.
For example, in a speech to
the Dale Carnegie Alumni Club
In Columbus the other evening,
the governor credited his suc
cessful rise in politics to his
“Carnegie training.” Said he:
“Success was slow In coming,
and hard. I didn’t win my first
attempt, nor my second. But with
the determination, Inspiration
and faith provided and enhanced
contributions of Georgia’s six
largest industrial categories, as
measured by employment. They
are textile products; apparel;
food products; transportation eq
uipment; lumber, wood and fur
niture products, and pulp and
paper products.
“Georgia has undergone a tr
emendous growth In Its economy
since World War II.” Mr. Cates
noted, “yet It has been hard to
focus attention on this develop
ment because of the geographic,
rural and urban variances that
Georgia enjoys. We hope this
program now under way will help
commend the vast contributions
made by our established Indust
ries.

by my participation in the Dale
Carnegie Course, I finally worked
my way up to the governor’s off
ice. I recommend this course to
anyone who desires to gain self
confidence and the ability to deal
effectively with people.”
Turning to national politics,
Gov. Maddox declared: “It’s too
bad the National Democratic
party officials didn’t take a Dale
Carnegie course in leadership.
“They had their own course in
‘How to Win Friends and Influence
People’ and they sought to win the
favor of beatniks, bums, hippies,
draftcard burners, hoodlums,
Vletniks, Communist-led agita
tors and those who have made a
religion out of LSD, dope and
disorder. But the truth is, the
National Democratic party has
been reading the wrong book. . .
“And now that the national
Democrats have been inflicted
with heavy losses and their can
didates plowed under, just as I
predicted would happen unless the
conservative voice within the
party was heeded, I suppose they
wiU be looking for a new book,
or a new course on ‘How to Win
an Election in 1972.’
“Meanwhile, there Is still a
need for Americans who love
their liberty and who are ready
to guard and defend it — Ameri
cans with character, morality and
ideals. . .Americans who live by
the golden rule and follow the
age-old principles so well de
fined by Dale Carnegie in their
dealings with their fellow men.”
