Georgia Oil Men
Wage Gas Tax Fight
ATLANTA (PRN) -
Georgia oil men are waging a
campaign to “fully explain
existing gasoline taxes and the
effect that a proposed gasoline
tax increase would have on the
motoring public.
As part of the effort,
several thousand service
station dealers across the state
are displaying driveway
posters calling for their
customers to “fight the gas-tax
monster.” The dealers also are
handing out informational
material on gasoline tax facts.
“We feel that the people of
this state should be acquainted
with the present gasoline tax
structure, and should know
beforehand of the direct
impact that any gasoline tax
hike would have on their
pocketbooks,” said Eric
Holmes, Jr., Executive
Secretary of the Petroleum
Council of Georgia.
Holmes said Georgians now
pay 11'/jc per gallon in state
and federal gasoline taxes and
state sales tax. The sales tax
applies not only to the price

of gasoline, but to the state
and federal gasoline taxes as
well, and constitutes a “tax on
tax,” he pointed out.
“Certainly, the motorists of
this state already are
overburdened with gasoline
tax and “tax on tax,” said
Holmes. “Nevertheless, there
are rumblings abroad that the
General Assembly will raise
the gasoline tax still higher,
and there also is talk of upping
the general sales tax.”
Holmes said both a gasoline
tax hike and an increase in the
sales tax would be doubly
disastrous for motorists.
“Under current proposals,
the total tax burden could be
increased from ll'/k to 13.9 c
per gallon,” he explained.
“Because of this danger, we in
the oil industry are striving to
let the people know in
advance exactly what the
consequences of such action
would be.”
Hence, the “fight the
gas-tax monster” driveway
posters and the tax facts
handoiits at the state’s service
stations.
