Newton Edges Murray County In Overtime
BY 808 GREER
(News And Sports Editor)
The Newton County Rams won their ninth straight victory of the
season Saturday night over Murray County at Chatsworth. The game
went into two overtime periods and saw the NCHS team pull the game
out 78-74. This also ended the undefeated string of the Murray County
squad at nine straight.
Friday night on the NCHSfloor
both girls and boys teams won
here as the Newton lassies posted
a 46-39 win and the boys won
handily 88-27 over Henry County
of McDonough.
This game featured all four
starting Rams scoring in double
figures although they played about
half the game. Tony Harris had
17, Bubba Hill 12, Jim Gainer
and Thad Blankenship 11 each,
and Luke Odum 10. Seven subs
hit the scoring column for Coach
Bradley’s squad.
In the tilt at Chatsworth Sat
urday night the NCHS five came
through in the final seconds of
the regulation game to tie the
count at 64-all. Bubba Hill sank
two charity tosses to knot the
game. In the first overtime it
was a layup basket by Luke Odum
that sent the game into the se
cond extra period. Going into the
second OT the score was 70-all.
Although Blankenship and Hill
had 50 points between them it was
the point total of Murray’s Gary
Jones that led the scorers in the
game. He banged home 41 mar
kers and that was high against a
Bradley-coached team in the past
11 years.
Making good on 28 of 35 free
throws spelled victory for the
NCHS team. Murray County had
32 field goals in the game and the
Rams had 25. Murray’s 10 of 21
charity tries doomed their chan
ces in the affair.
The Chatsworth boys shot 56%
from the field and Newton had a
field goal percentage of 49.
Coach Bradley stated Monday
that the win over Murray County
was “One of the most exciting
games we have ever played at
Newton High.” His team had met
Murray County only one other
time in history and that was in
the State AA tournament in 1962,
when Murray eliminated Billy
Shaw, Mike Rutledge and team
mates at O’Keefe gym.

The Newton High girls basket
ball team returned to action at
the Covington gymnasium Friday
night after the long Christmas
holidays and posted a convincing
46-39 win over the Henry County
sextet.
Coach Tom Wortman’s three
starting forwards divided the
scoring evenly with Martha Ellen
Banks getting 16 points and Judy
Clay and Phyllis Cooksey 15 each.
Henry County’s Ruth Pipkin was
point maker for the game with a
big 30 points.
Enjoying a four-point margin
at halftime, the NCHS girls held
on during the latter stages of
the conflict. Cooksey sprained an
ankle late in the game but re
turned to the line-up and scored
the last four field goals for the
local sextet. Clay also dropped
in two free throws and that just
about iced the game for the NCHS
combination.
The local team traveled to
Chatsworth Saturday and were
edged by the home forces 50-47.

Coach Ronald Bradley says that Stephens County may be the
team to beat for the Region BAA overall title, come February
in Elberton . . . Would you believe that Missouri beat Alabama
35-10 without completing a single pass. The Mizzou bovs made
404 yards on the ground . . . when money is found growing on
trees there’s usually some grafting going on ... And here’s
the wording a sign we observed recently: “But, have you tried

Tim Macy of North Springs High is the only Georgian named
to the Parade Magazine’s 1969 All-American high school foot
ball squad. Tim was named to the third team .. . Sports Net
work, Inc. carried the Peach Bowl on TV last week but the game
was blacked out in the Atlanta area . . . Georgia set another re
cord for Vince Dooley in the Sugar Bowl although they didn’t win
the game over Arkansas. The largest crowd to see a Dooley
coached team, 82,000, saw the tilt.
Georgia has signed an end, Lynn Hunnicutt of Pepperell High of
Lindale, who caught 53 passes for 759 yards in five games during
the past gridiron season ... In looking back over the bowl results,
the three Big Teams of the SEC (Georgia. Alabama and Tennessee)
all lost in the post-season games. However, Auburn, Ole Miss
and LSU won their tilts . . . Kansas Coach Pepper Rodgers’ name
continued to be mis-spelled. It does have a “D” in his last name.

People who saw the Peach Bowl game in Atlanta might think that
the combination of Bill Cappieman and Ron Sellers of FSU may
have been formed at least three years ago. In fact, Sellers’ Natio
nal Pass catching record of 3,598 yards has been achieved on throws
from three different quarterbacks: Gary Pajcic, Kim Ha'mmond
and Bill Cappieman . . . Bulldog Coach Vince Dooley is gradually
visiting the major bowls via an Easterly direction. First, it was
the Sun Bowl, then the Cotton Bowl, the Liberty Bowl and the Sugar
Bowl. Maybe next year it will be the Gator or Orange Bowl?
One of the Baton Rouge, La. sports writers covering the Peach
Bowl in Atlanta said that he couldn’t remember LSU using only one
man to rush the punter as they did at Grant Field. The scribe
said he has followed the Bengals for 25 years ... The Liberty
