ocal Cagers Are Improving
Seldom have we been fascinated in recent years by the improved
play of both Newton High basketball teams as we have with the
1968-69 teams here in Covington, The NCHS boys and girls have
shozn tremendous strength on the hardwood in the past three
weeks,
When the season started back in November, 1968, the girls and
boys lost two of their first three games, and the season at that
time seemed as if it might be a long year for followers of the
teams,
Coach Tom Wortman made some changes in the lineup of his
girls team, and that maneuver has proven to be a blessing for
the team. Jackie Matthews was moved from a forward to a guard
spot, and sophomore Martha Ellen Banks has been inserted in the
starting lineup as a forward along with Judy Clay and Phyllis Cook
sey. Cindy Meyer and Becky Smith are fine reserves.
The Newton guards, other than Matthews, have played excellent
ball in the past two weeks. They are Carol Freeman, Marcia John
son and Debbie Wiley,
Bradley’s boys team looks altogether different than the team
of pre-Christmas vintage., One of the best games played by his
team was at Chatsworth when the Rams won a double overtime
tilt 77-74. This Murray County team is said to be one of the best
in North Georgia and will definitely be a contender in the State
A tourney this year.
All five starters (Bubba Hill, Thad Blankenship, Luke Odum,
Tony Harris, and Jim Gainer) are good shooters from the field
and each is an excellent defensive man, In reserve, the Rams can
put several good men into the game, such as Mickey Dickerson,
‘Stuart Clive, Clay Summers, Kevin Price and others,
Yes, by the time the sub-region tourney rolls around Feb, 13
at Gainesville, the two clubs of NCHS will be ready to play top
flight basketball and each may earn a trip to the State AA Tourna
“ment in March,

olina has a freshman on their basketball team who is a sure-fire
All-American, He is Bill Chamberlain of New York City, and is

sports teams, says that the Rockdale 27-owinover the Newton Rams
(27-0) was the best game Coach Oneil’s boys played all during the
football season . . . Can a team score with one second left on the
clock and they have the ball out of bounds? Yes, it happened here
Friday night as Newton High’s Phyllis Cooksey hit a field goal
against Rockdale County as soon as she received the pass in
bounds.

In a magazine’s All Pro football team announced last week
listed 10 of the first 22 players from the AFL, Joe Namath was
named as the All-Pro quarterback , . . California and Florida
