the Methodist Church,
Everyone was very indebted
to Mrs. Kellum for providing

Newton County High School is
very proud of its Y clubs. These
clubs have proven throughout the
years that they are worthy to be
called Christian organizations.,
There are four clubs in the high
school, The Alpha-Tri-Y is for
Freshmen and Sophomore girls,
the Gamma=Tri-Y for Junior
girls and the Senior-Tri-Y for
Senior girls, The Hi-Y is for

On Y Work
The January meeting of the
Gamma=-Tri-Hi-Y was called to
order by President Gay Bankston
on January 15, Sandy Peterson
gave the devotion, The various
club reports were then given,
Both the School and Community
Projects for January will be to
make posters advertising YMCA
Week and the Y Club church
service to be held on January
26, Also as a part of the Sch
ool Project refreshments were
served to the one-act play casts
from the schools that took part
in the event last Thursday.
It was announced that the Y
Club church service would be
held January 26 at the Calvary
Baptist Church at 7:20 p, m,

The Future Teachers of Amer=
ica Club met on Friday, January
10. It was opened by President
Jackie Matthews as she called
the club to order,
First Eve Morris gave the club
a very nice devotional taken from
Luke 5:1-11, After all the busi
ness was taken care of, Vice=-
President Julia Ellis introduced
the speaker, Miss Sessions. Miss
Sessions is a Home Economics
teacher at Newton County High
School, She talked to the club
on the social life at the Univ
ersity of Georgia, where she at=-
tended school for two years,
Miss Sessions’ talk proved to
be very interesting to the mem=
bers and especially to those plan=
ning to attend college, She an
swered many questions until the
meeting was adjourned by the
bell,

At Newton High
During the past few weeks
Newton County High School has
had several interesting and out
standing chapel programs, On
January 8 Mr, Ben Fortson,
Secretary of State, was the guest
speaker at chapel, which was held
in the high school gymnasium,
In his very patriotic speech he"
explained how proud he was to
be an American, and also brou=-
ght out the fact that we as stu
dents and leaders of tomorrow
must trust in God if America
is to continue to be a great
nation,
This past Friday, January 17,=
Mr, Josh Powell was in charge
of the chapel program, Mr, Po=-
well is a former Georgia Tech
basketball player, He challenged
the students to be good Ameri=
can citizens and to do their very
best in everything, One point
of his discussion dealt with the
question of whether there is
really a God. Mr, Powell sta
ted that a country as wonderful
as America could not have been
created without the help of God.
On Feburary 28 Mr, Jimmy
Bently, the Comptroller Gene=
ral, will speak during the regu=-
lar chapel program,

monies February 9.
Exercises are slated for 2 p, m,
at the Northside Methodist
Church,
Miss Bone graduated last June
from Newton County High School
and entered Piedmont in Septem=
ber,
boys of all classes.,
The members of the Y clubs
take part in the annual events
sponsored by the YMCA of Geo
rgia. In the spring delegates from
each of the clubs attend Youth
Assembly. Youth Assembly is
held in Atlanta at the State Cap
itol and Y club members from
all over the state take over run
ning the government for a few
days. lLast year Marcia Elizer
held the office of House Floor
Leader at Youth Assembly.
Also in the spring, members
attend Christian Life Conference
at Rock Eagle. This is a week
end of fun and entertainment, but
it also has some serious
moments.,

recipients, made the Dean’s List
at the University of Georgia.
She is in the college of Edu=-
cation, Mary is involved in se=

Policy Chairman for Brumby
Hall, works with the University

tional Tournament Friday and Saturday at the NCHS gym, Both NCHS squads won championship tre

helps prepare the new officers
for their year of work ahead.
In the fall a Program Plan=-
ning Caravan is held at a near
by high school to answer any last
questions the officers might have
before they begin their work and
to inform those who were unable
to attend the Rock Eagle Confer
ence.
The Y clubs of Newton County
High School render various ser=-
vices to the school and com
munity. The Hi-Y is responsible
for the sale of tickets atthe home
basketball games. All the clubs
rotate each week putting upa bull
etin board in the hall at school.
The Y clubs are alsoresponsible
in part for promoting clean sport=-
smanship at various athletic
events. They also promote ciean
scholarship, clean speech, and
clean living,
In November the Y clubs under
took the project of collecting
clothing for needy children. This
clothing was collected to send to
an orphanage in Korea for the
children there. In this project
the Senior-Tri-Hi-Y was 1009
contributing.
The Y clubs have received
many honors to go along with
their hard work. The clubs have
been recognized as the honor
club of the month in the North
east District at various times.
Last year four of the sevenclubs
to receive AAT- ratings were the
four clubs of Newton County High
School.
The Y clubs set an example of
Christian living by their hard
work and effort.
