A Tribute
The Citizens of the Rocky
Plains Community along with the
citizens of the county were
grieved over the news of the pass=
ing of Mr. R. E. (Ed) Chesnut
on Wednesday evening, January
Bth,
- Mr. Chesnut was born in our
community August 30, 1911, the
son of Mrs. C, E, Chesnut and
the late Mr. Chesnut, He was a
devoted member of Hopewell As=
sociate Reformed Presbyterian
Church, He was an up-right Ch=
ristian and only sickness kept him
from performing his spiritual du=
ties, He loved his Lord and
Master and was ever ready when
He called him., He served faith
fully as Deacon for some years
and then as Elder in which posi=
tion he served until his death.
Mr. Chesnut was a former Sun
day School Superintendent and
was Treasurer of the Church.
He loved the church and was
a faithful attendant at all of its
services, He was interested in
its work, and supported it with
his interest, his time and his
means.
His passing leaves a vacancy,
and a great sorrow in our midst,
but we rejoice in the Christian
Hope. We are pleased to believe
that the Master had need of this
beloved servant of His, and that
beyond the veil he serves upon
a higher level than was possible
here.
Mr. Chesnut was very fond of
children and had away of at=
tracting them to him. For many
years Mr, Chesnut drovea school
bus.
We realize our loss is nothing
to the loss felt in his home as
he was a devoted husband and
loving father. Our hearts are
filled with sorrow for his fa=-
mily, loved ones and many fr
iends in this earthly loss. Our
loss is his eternal gain,
Mr., Chesnut was married to
Miss Frances Moss Nov. 11,
1933, They have two children.
Funeral services were held at
Hopewell Church Friday after
noon, January 10th, with the pas
tor, Rev. Wayne Dickson conduct
ing the service. The large atten=-
dance at his funeral attested to
the esteem in which he was held.
Interment was held in the church
cemetery.
We are reminded of the bre=-
vity of human life. ‘“How frail
we are’’. And, we say, to all,
‘‘Be ye also ready.”
Mr. Chesnut is survived by
his wife, Mrs., Frances Moss
Chesnut, daughter, Mrs. Delton
(Eleanor) Cain; son, Gary Ches=
nut, granddaughter, Susan Cain,
son~in-law Mr, Delton Cain, mot
her, Mrs. C, E, Chesnut, sister,
Mrs, Mary Rosser, brothers,
J. W., C. S. and Albert Chesnut,
We share with the family in
mourning his death commending
them to the comforting grace of
God,
Smoldering Cigarettes:
Handle With Care
You wouldn’t think of a smold=-
ering cigarette as an instrument
of danger the way you would a
stick of dynainite.
Yet, the Insurance Informat=
ion Institute reports that smoking
and matches are the leading cause
of building fires in the United
States, resulting in 25 to 30 ti=
mes as many fires as miscell
aneous and unclassified explo=
sions,
During the past few years,
there have been an average of
nearly one million building fi
res annually, with an annual eco
nomic loss exceeding $1.50 bil=
lion, the I.LI, adds. And one of
every six building fires is cau=
sed by careless smoking habits.
So remember to handle ciga=
rettes with care — use ash
trays, don’t smoke in bed and be
sure ashes are out before depo
siting them in trash cans. e
