Cohen has served as Vice-Pre=-
sident of Newton Federal since
1963,
Mr. Vining was elected Sec
retary=-Treasurer of the Assoc
iation on September 15, 1947 and
served in that capacity until the
death of W, C. MeGahee, in
July 1963, when he was elected
Executive Vice-President and
has been its Managing Officer
since that date.
Mr. Cohen and Mr. Vining
have seen the assets of Newton
Federal grow from a few thou
sand dollars to its present size
of over twelve million dollars.
In his report to the Share
holders, Mr. Vining gave a com=
parison of the financial condition
of the Association on December
31, 1968, with the financial con=-
dition of the Association on Dec=
ember 31, 1967. During 1968, the
assets of the Association showed
an increase of 11.8%, Newton
Federal paid its savers over
$475,000.00 in dividends during
1968, the largest dividend in the
history of the Association. The
dividend paid on December 30,
1968, was the 90th consecutive
dividend paid by Newton Fed
eral. He predicted Newton Fed=
eral would pay its savers over
a half million dollars in 1969.
The Reserves for the Association
increased approximately 19%.
Mr. Vining reported that the
Association made loans inexcess
of two and a half million dollars
during 1968 and that Newton Fed=-
eral had helped 158 families be=
come home owners.
In looking ahead to 1969, the an=-

nual report indicated that there
would be even further increases
in the competition for savings
dollars, This would present chal=
lenges to the savings and loan
business and the real estate and
housing business.
Mr, Vining said ¢ There were
other factors, too. Many families
spent more and saved less, Auto
mobiles, homes, color television
sets, and hard goods of all kinds
experienced soaring sales. No
doubt some families wereappre
hensive that many items would
cost more next year, For this
reason, some money that normal
ly would have been put away in
the savings account found its way
into the marketplace.
¢Though the recovery in
savings flows so far has not been
striking, it should be noted that
the growth in savings is continu
ing at a slow, steady pace, and
we expect this to accelerate dur
ing the first half of 1969.”?
¢All in all, I think that 1969
will prove to be another year of
progress and development for
Newton Federal Savings and Loan
Association and the community as
well.”
Immediately after the Share
holders Meeting, the Directors of
the Association held its monthly
meeting for the election of
officers for the year 1969. Dr.
J. R, Sams was re=elected Pre=-
sident. Dr. Sams is alsoa charter
member of the Board. Dr. Sams
served as Vice=-President of the
Association from 1946 until July,
1963, at which time he was elected
President and has served as the
Association’s President since
that date, Mr. Cohen was re=
elected Vice-President. Mr.
Vining was re-elected Executive
Vice=President. Jack McGiboney
was re-elected Secretary-Trea
surer. Mr. McGiboney joined the
Association in 1963 and has
served as Secretary-Treasurer
since that date. Miss Grace Cook

retary-Treasurer, Miss Cook
