Christian Signs With Pro Eagles
BMI \ , < x - ■
COVINGTON’S TIM CHRISTIAN signed a professional football con
tract with the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL on February 5. Tim
is shown above making one of his sensational catches against the
Miami Hurricanes during the 1968 season at Auburn. Christian is
a split end and caught eight TD passes last season for the Auburn
team. He received a bonus for signing with the Eagles. His salary
is reported to be in the $15,000-$20,000 yearly bracket Tim could
be the first Newton Countian to play regularly on a Pro football
team. Two other NCHS players signed pro contracts but did not
play—Larry Laster and Ed Hertwig.

7 State Tourney Trips In 8 Years
The Newton Rams have been to the State Tournament seven out
of the last eight years. NCHS won the State AA tourney in March,
1964. . .Herbert Schmertz of Mobil Chemical Company in Neu York,
says he is awaiting the August clash of the New York Giants and the
New York Jets in the big Yale Bowl. Schmertz was a Covington
visitor Thursday along with other high Mobil officials.. .Paul Har
vey says that “History rewards persistence.” If that is the case
then Casey Stengel and Richard Nixon are prime examples. Stengel
managed the old Boston Braves and they were in the second divi
sion. Then he switched over to the N. Y. Yankees and they were
World Champions. Everyone knows the comeback story of Presi
dent Nixon.
5 Golf Tourneys In Florida
Roger Zuercher, Newton-Rockdale District Boy Scout Executive,
explained his close, crew-haircut as follows: “When 1 wash my
face, I also wash my hair.” .. .We shouldn’t overlook this football
fact about Covington’s Lee Piper. He is the first athlete to wm STAR
honors at Newton High. . .Five major golf tournaments in Florida
this spring will offer some $600,000 to the touring Pros. The
Greater Jacksonville Open is set for March 17-23 at the Deerwood
Club.
Basketball Banquet March 28
Friday, March 28, is the date set for the Newton High Basket
ball banquet at the NCHS cafeteria, according to an announcement
by officials of the local Tipoff Club. Tickets may be purchased
from Tipoff President Ben Banks, Neal Banks at Cohen’s or from
Mrs. Henry Odum, Jr. at the Courthouse ... Mike Cavan, Georgia
sophomore quarteback, has been awarded the Jacksonville Journal's
citation as “Sophomore of The Year in the SEC.”
Mike Dahl of Oglethorpe College is a 6-5, 210 pounder, whose
credentials merit All-America consideration. His four-year field
goal percentage is 54, and his season rebound average this year
is 13.1 per game. Coach Billy Carter says he is the “Best big
man in Oglethorpe history.”. . Atlanta Braves baseball games
last year averaged less than 2 1/2 hours per tilt at The Stadium.
The 2:27 time was second to the St. Louis Cardinals 2:18. . .“A
team that wins most, has a good defense,” Washington Red skin
Coach Vince Lombardi.
Joe L. Brown, General Manager erf the Pittsburgh Pirates says
that “there is a negative press in organized baseban”. . .NCHS
boys, if they should reach the March 8 first game of the state AA
Playoffs against the Region 7 team, had better watch out for Calhoun
or Cass, both potent teams. . .“Wealth is not his who has it, but
those who enjoy it.” (Anonymous).
Covington Aces
Seek Revenge
Saturday Night
Covington Aces Basketball

night. Coach Wright contributes
the loss mostly to the team not

The Aces will be out for revenge
Saturday night when they play
host to highly talented former
Morris Brown College players.
Last year the Aces dropped a
101-98 decision to this team.
There will be a preliminary
game, The Spring Hill Hawks led
by Sharp Shooter Johnny Brown
and Harris Town led by Sum
mers and Benton Gunners. Game
time 7;00 p.m. at the R. L. Cou
sins Gym.
