Petrels Accept
NCAA Invitation
The Stormy Petrels of Ogle
thorpe College have accepted an
invitation to the N.C.A.A. South
Atlantic Regional Tournament,
March 7th and Bth. The site is
not yet definite but it looks like
Norfolk, Virginia will be the host
city. Other participants will be
named Wednesday, thus indicating
Oglethorpe a top choice by being
selected first. Howard Gentry,
Chairman of the selection com
mittee issued the invitation and
John Foley of the N.C.A.A. con
firmed the bid late Thursday,
February 18th.
This is the second consecutive
year the Petrels have been in
vited to the regional tournament,
the third time in four years, and
the fourth time since becoming an
N.C.A.A. member institution in
1963. In 1963, the Petrels won
the South Central Regional de
feating Bellarmine, and Tennes
see A and I, and won third place

THE COVINGTON NEWS
In the National Tournament by
defeating Philadelphia Textile,
losing to Whlttenberg In over
time, and defeating Southern Il
linois. In 1965-66, the Petrels
placed second in the South Cen
tral by defeating Winston-Salem
and the famed “Earl the Pearl’’
Monroe, but lost to Kentucky-
Wesleyan who went on to win the
National Championship. Last
year, Oglethorpe fell victim to
the same Kentucky-Wesleyan five
in the first game of the regional,
but won consolation honors by de
feating Bethune-Cookman. Again
Kentucky-Wesleyan won the Nat
ional Championship. Coach Car
ter wonders just how far his
teams would have gone if not for
K-W.
This year the Petrels hope for
better things. A revamping of
the regionals has placed Ogle
thorpe in the South Atlantic. “At
least we won’t have to play Ken
tucky-Wesleyan again” said
Coach Carter. Kentucky-Wes
leyan is now in the South Reg
ional. . .and guess what the pair
ings are in the National Tourna
ment. . .that’s right, South vs.
South Atlantic In the first round.
When asked about this coincid
ence, Coach Carter remarked,
“wouldn’t it be ironic if Ken
tucky-Wesleyan and us won our
regionals and had to play each
other again the first round of the
National. . .the odds should be in
our favor this time.”

The only distasteful thing about
the Elberton trip (to some New
ton fans) was the action of the
Elberton City Police in lagging
some of our cars for parking
near the gymnasium, which is
located in the heart of town.
Two of those who got tickets
($1.00) were Mrs. John Bur

R. Sammons. It looks like the
Elberton Police could have been
a little lenient after 7 p. m.,
but possibly the city needed the
money, and one of the best ways
is to “gouge” visiting sports
