PLAYERS, COACH, Officials and Cheerleaders tried in vain to find Jim Gainer’s contact lense in the
Rain-Hart County game Friday night at Elberton. After a futile search play was resumed and the Rams
won the battle 77-51. Ram team manager Darrell Huckaby found the lense later near the corner of
the gymnasium.

Handicapped Youth
Becomes Hunter
The challenge of hunting
and target shooting helped to
rehabilitate 22-year-old Wil
liam Sherman of Oak Ridge,
Tenn., who is paralyzed from
the chest down as the result of
a diving accident five years ago
and is confined to a wheelchair.
He has only partial use of
his fingers and merely to lift
a shotgun is a tremendous ef
fort. After many months in
traction, he underwent therapy
at a rehabilitation center and
then returned home to begin
a new life.
He established an income for
himself by setting up a tele
phone answering service, be
came a director of the region's
Recordings for Recovery pro
gram, which supplies free mu
sical recordings for shut-ins,
and then decided that he
wanted outdoor activity.
Recalling his experience in
hunting as a kid, he decided to
engage in the sport. After
three months of experiment
ing and shooting, he joined a
gun club and went to the or
ganization’s indoor range.
The only real limitation on
his hunting and target shoot
ing activities at the moment
is mobility.
"Getting to and from dif
ferent areas is something of a
problem,” Bill said, “but once
I am there I can get around
pretty well in my chair. I hope
to be able to obtain a bush
buggy in the near future and
that will make hunting a lot
easier.”

Dog Bills
Near Vote
Two house bills aimed at al
leviating Georgia’s problems
with wild and free-running dogs,
were reported out of House com
mittee Wednesday, according to
Representative Howard Rainey of
Cordele.
The two pieces of Legislation,
House Bill 225, Dumping and
Abandoning Dogs and House Bill
226, Rabies Control, were re
ported out without any amend
ments, Rainey said. Now, the
bills may be called up for vote
on the floor of the House at the
discretion of the Speaker of the
House.
Rainey, Chairman of the House
Game and Fish Committee, also
is chairman of the House Wild
Dog Study Committee and one of
the authors of the two bills.
The state Game and Fish Com
mission has for the past few years
called for enactment of such laws,
to aid in counteracting the pro
blem of losses of deer and other
wildlife to wild and free-running
dogs. Georgia cattlemen and
swine growers joined in the fight,
when surveys proved livestock
losses to dogs were very high.
Os the 250 to 300 species of
sharks in the oceans of the world,
six of these considered most dan
gerous to man are known to fre
quent Florida waters. These in
clude the tiger, white - tipped
mako, bull, lemon, sand tiger,
and the great white shark,
according to icthologists at Ma
rineland of Florida.
Conservationists
Hope For New
Wildlife Laws
With the new session of the
Georgia General Assembly again
under way, conservationists in
the state are again looking to
ward the introduction of new
legislation which will affect wi
ldlife conservation in the state.
The Georgia Game and Fish
Commission is hoping for new
legislation in at least three ar
eas, to come out of the current
session. These Include:
A bill which would make any
one responsible for pollution re
sulting in a fish kill, and re
quire the polluter to pay the ac
tual value of all fish killed.
—A bill which would give the
Game and Fish Commission some
assistance in controlling large
populations of wild dogs around
the state, which make serious
inroads into the numbers of many
species of wildlife, not to men
tion livestock.
--A bill which would require
approval of the General Assem
bly before any state-owned mar
shlands and coastal wetlands co
uld be leased for mining or any
other use that would disturb or
destroy the marshes. Another
bill would set up a Coastal Wet
lands Control Board to preserve
Georgia’s marshes.
--The Game and Fish Com
mission will ask for a budget
Increase of about $1 1/2 million
to Initiate needed programs of
the commission.
In addition to asking for such
legislation, the Game and Fish
Commission will oppose any bil
ls which would ask for unwise
controls on firearms.
The sleeping habits of the tro
pical triggerfish can be compared
to those of humans, state biolo
gists at Marineland of Florida.
Triggerfish often retire in a
protected area and generally fall
asleep while lying on their sides.
They do not awaken immediately
when distrubed; but, like most or
us, take a while to become alert
and active.

Kirkland May Be Tar Heel?
Jim Gainer’s cousin, Dan Kirkland of Columbus, is presently
being wooed by the University of North Carolina and Kentucky.
He is the Number One basketball player in Georgia high schools...
Saturday the Clemson Tigers dedicated their new field house,
Littlejohn Coliseum. It was named in honor of a famous Clemson
Tiger. Not to detract anything from Mr. Littlejohn, but we thought
that Ed Robinson of Covington, was Clemson’s most famous gra
duate. . .And, by the way, this is the 12th straight year that Clem
son basketball teams have had a Mahaffey of LaGrange.
Bunny Club Basketball Game
The Newton County Jaycees will stage a Bunny Club Basketball
game and fashion show at the NCHS gymnasium on March 10.
Actually there will be two cage games that evening: The Jaycees
vs Oxford College Intramural Champions, and the Playboy Club
Bunnies vs Newton Jaycees. . .Who is the shortest starting college
basketball player in the Nation? It is Frank Sylvester of Bradley
University. He is 5-4. . .The average age of the American today is
28. It was 30-plus in 1950.
Rams “Booed” Again
It seems to me that, becuase the Rams win so much, we are the
most despised team in Georgia high school basketball. We got
“booed” again at the Elberton gym when our players were in
troduced. . . Rick Hunter (6-3, 210 lbs.) of Mobile, Ala. has signed
a football scholarship with Perkerson College in Mississippi. Rick
is a brother of Covington’s Bob Hunter and is the grandson of
Mrs. Eva Ballard of Oxford.
Ted’s Last Time At Bat >Fas Homer
You tarpon fishermen can count yourself lucky if you land one
of eight strikes from that fish.. .“Pat Pride” carpeting, in a bright
red, is on the Sanford Stadium Press Box. This carpeting is made
by Patcraft Mills of Dalton. A Vice-President of Patcraft is M. B.
Shaw, formerly of Porterdale. . .Ted Williams, a new manager
of the Washington baseball Senators, hit a home run on his very
last time at bat before retiring. That was his 521st.
Manolo Orantes of Spain won the Macon International Tennis
Tournament held last week at the New City Coliseum... The Uni
versity of Tennessee calls its complicated defense the “Chinese
Defense.” It is said to be a combination of zone and man-to man
. . . Here’s something we never realized was true! The Boston
Celtics have never had a player who led the NBA in scoring dur
ing the season . . . Shug Campbell, one of the Rams staunchest
supporters, says he is campaigning for Thad Blankenship to be
listed in the Journal’s Top 25 Players in the state. He calls up
The Journal occasionaHy and gives them the very dickens!
Just what percentage of shots are hit from the field by a college
basketball player? Well, Lew Alcindor of the UCLA has an average
of 64% for his three years. If he maintains that average he wHI set
a national record. . .Emerson Foote, the publicity agent who coined
the phrase “Lucky Strike means fine tobacco” has joined the op
position as of late. He is now campaigning for the non-smokers. ..
Whatever became of Hadacol?. . .Wills High basketball coach Bob
Blankenship has resigned. His team ended the Rams’ 129-game
home court winning streak.
Carver High, the 1967 State AA champs, look like the team to
beat again this March. They have scored over 100 points in 12
games this year (that’s over half of the slate). However, there is
a bright side. Carver has lost three games this season. . .Very
frankly, we wish that Tim Christian had signed a pro football
contract with an AFL team rather than an AFL club. The AFL
is now as strong or stronger than the NFL with two American
teams, the Jets and Oakland better, than Baltimore. Christian
signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
