Mrs. Mask Has 40-Year Bibb Record
PORTERDALE—On February
1, 1969, Mrs. Delphin (Margaret
Longshore) Mash completed 40
years of service with the Bibb
Manufacturing Company at Por
terdale.
Some years ago, the late 8.8.
Snow, spoke of “walking in the
shadow of the giants” as he re
called his experiences with the
Bibb. The roster of those for
whom Mrs. Mask has worked
in a secretarial position reads
like a memorable list of
“giants.” First, there was the
late J. O. Porter for whom she
began work in 1929. Then came

Fly A Kite?
Not In Rain
Many Americans are fond of
telling people to “Go fly a kite.”
But there are times when peo
ple should be told “Don’t fly
a kite.”
The Insurance Information In
stitute cites certain precautions
which should be taken when plann
ing to unfurl kites into the brisk
winds of March.
Use dry string, wood and paper,
never wire or metal, for kite
equipment. Fly the kites in open
areas far away from power lines.
And most important, never fly
kites when its raining.

VEGETABLE CONNOISEUR
Fresh vegetables not only are
packed with good-for-you ingre
dients like vitamins and minerals,
but they also add color and variety
to your meals.
With this in mind, I would like
to share some vegetable buying
tips with our Newton County
homemakers.
How does an acorn squash dif
fer from a butternut? What is
the difference between a yam and
a sweetpotato? How do you choose
a good onion?
An experienced shopper may or
may not know the answers to these
questions. If you are an average
shopper, you will probably ap
preciate some information on
buying these and other vegetables.
And if you don’t know the answers
to these questions, you might ap
preciate an answer.
I’ll try to give both.
Acorn and butternut squash,
mentioned In the questions, are
winter squash, which means they
are marketed only when fully ma
ture. Other winter varieties are

maturity, indicated by a hard

color do not affect flavor. Be
sure to avoid squash with cuts,
punctures, sunken spots or moldy
spots on the rind —all indications
of decay. A tender rind indicates
Immaturity—a sign of poor eating
quality.
Now let’s look at the business
of those potatoes or yams. Two
types of sweet potatoes are avail
able the year-round. Moist
sweet potatoes, sometimes called
yams, are the most common type.
They have orange colored flesh
and are very sweet. The true
yam is the root of a tropical
vine which is not grown com
mercially in the United States.
The second type—dry sweet
potatoes—have a pale colored
flesh and are low in moisture
content. Their production has
dwindled rapidly in recent years.
What about onions? The many
varieties of onions fall into three
general classes: globe onions,
granex-grano onions and Spanish

onions. The classes of onions
differ in shape, size and flavor.
But the general tips on selection
are about the same for each
class.
Look for hard or firm onions
that are dry and have relatively
small necks. They should be
covered with papery outer scales
and be reasonably free from green
sunburn spots and other blem
ishes.
Thanks to the increased effic
iency of marketing and the great
strides made in recent years in
the produce Industry, most of the
fresh vegetables on today’s mar
i.at are of good quality. Advanced
technology of production meth
ods, mechanical precooling,
better shipping and storage meth
ods and refrigerated displays
make possible an abundance of
vegetables.
In many food stores many fresh
vegetables come washed, trim
med and pre-packaged individual
ly for the convenience of con
sumers.
For that wonderful feeling of
being a vegetable connoisseur,
you might want to order a publi
cation from the U. S. Department
of Agriculture. It’s called “How
to Buy Fresh Vegetables.” I
think you will find the informat
ion helpful. Write to Office of

Insurance Dividend
Explained by VA
WASHINGTON (ANF) —
No special dividend is being
paid on lapsed GI insurance
policies held by WW II vet
erans. The Veterans Admin
istration recently reasserted
this fact in order to squelch
a widespread false rumor
that such a dividend would
be paid.
VA officials said a 1969
dividend would be paid . . .
but only to those 185,000
WWI veterans and 4,100,000
WWII veterans who still
have GI insurance policies in
force. No application for this
dividend is necessary since
it will be paid automatically
on the anniversary date of
the policy.

The photoelectric smoke-sensing
system of Cardox, Chicago, can
detect the first trace of smoke
in the air and sound an alarm
that a fire is beginning. Some
fires do not generate sufficient
heat to trigger heat-sensitive

vent damage. However, where
there is fire, there is smoke,
and the smoke detector knows
smoke when it sniffs it.
