Porterdale Woman's Club
Hears Os Cancer Dangers

evening, March 17, for the Night
Division meeting of the club with
Mrs. Henry Whitfield presiding.
Mrs. Annie Day led the group
in prayer.
For the devotional, Mrs. Bel
mont Dennis chose prayer as
her theme. She was introduced
by Mrs. E. L. Digby, who also
presented Ben Banks of Coving
ton, Earlier Treatment Educat
ion Chairman of the Newton Co
unty Unit, American Cancer So
ciety. Mr. Banks gave an infor
mative program concerning
cancer and was joined for a dia
logue presentation with Dr. Mic
hael Pulliam. Ladies were given
an opportunity to ask questions.
It was shocking to learn that
Newton County continues to re
main in the upper five per cent
in cancer deaths of the entire
state of Georgia per 1,000 pop
ulation.
Minutes were read and ap
proved. Correspondence was also
read by the Assistant Secretary,
Mrs. Gene Owens.
Hie hostess committee re
ported attendance of 57 with 4
visitors. Mrs. Claire Bennett
gave the status of the treasury.
Weekend chairmen responsible

share in this project.

ellias.
Mrs. Floyd, the groom’s mo
ther, wore a beige brocade en
semble with matching jacket and
brown accessories and corsage
of pink camellias.
The bride’s book was kept in
the vestibule by Miss Jeannie
McLendon of Columbus.
The bride chose as her going
away ensemble a winter white
wool coat dress with brown ac
cessories and orchid corsage
from her bridal bouquet.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd are now
residing in Morrow.

Careers Carousel
CARROLLTON—Some 300 Girl
Scouts and their advisors from
throughout northwest Georgia will
attend a “Careers Carousel”
conference on the campus of
West Georgia College March 21-
23.
Various workshops will beheld
to determine career opportunities
in such areas as education, jour
nalism, home economics, art,
fashion and merchandising, bus
iness, nursing and mental health,
public health and physical ther
apy, conservation, and govern
ment service.
Polly Lassiter Cook, associate
director of the Wesley Foundation
at the University of Miami, will
speak at the Careers Carousel
Banquet Saturday night in the
college’s Student Center.
Conference participants will
come from Bartow, Catoosa, Ch
attooga, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb,
DeKalb, Douglas, Fannin, Floyd,
Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwin

Local Veterans
May Get Care
At Vets Home
Covlngton-There are many vet
erans In the Newton County area
who may be eligible for admis
sion to the new Georgia Veterans
Nursing Home in Augusta, Evon
Jordon, Manager of the Coving
ton Office of the Georgia Depart
ment of Veterans Service said
today.
Mr. Jordon said the Veterans
Nursing Home which recently
opened, is equipped to offer qual
ity nursing home care and re
habilitative services to eligible
veterans.
Mr. Jordon said application to
the Nursing Home can be made
through the Covington Field Office
of the Veterans Service Depart
ment. A medical review board
of the Medical College of Georgia,
which operates the Nursing Home,
determines who Is admitted.

At the opposite end of the table
was the silver punch bowl with a
center arrangement of a three
branched candelabra decorated
with talisman roses and fern.
Silver trays and compotes of
dainty sandwiches, mints and nuts
with napkins imprinted with the
names and date of the honored
couple, prefected the appoint
ments. Presiding at the table
were Misses Brenda Huff, Lynn
NOell, Clara Hays and Mrs. Gene
Parks.
For their wedding trip Mrs.
Christie changed to a brown and
white plaid skirt and vest suit
with brown crepe blouse. Per
fecting her outfit were brown
patent accessories and the orc
hid corsage lifted from her wed
ding bouquet.
Mrs. Trainer Entertains
Sisters And Brothers
Mrs. T. D. Trainer entertained
Sunday with a buffet luncheon
at her home on Madison Highway,
with guests being her brothers
and sisters and their families.
An arrangement of red roses
centered the buffet table and
potted plants and various other
artistic arrangements were at
tractively arranged throughout
the other sections of the home.
