Petty Wants Atlanta 500
Victory On March 30th
HAMPTON—PopuIar favorite
Richard Petty, after suffering
exasperating moments at Daytona
and North Carolina Motor Speed
way, hopes he will find victory
range in the March 30, Atlanta
500. Petty, who established an
all-time victory record in 1967,
won the Riverside 500 in his
first race as a Ford Driver but
the familiar blue Petty color has
been non-competitive in his last
two outings. “Aw, we’ll get to
running,” Richard said with a
smile after the Carolina 500.
“We can’t be all bad: we won
Riverside and in the past, that’s
the place I looked worst at.”
Petty will be making his first
attempt at Atlanta International
Raceway in a Ford. He’s al
ways been a front-runner at AIR
in a Plymouth, winning the 1966
Atlanta 500 and Dixie 400.
A. J. Foyt, one of auto rac
ing’s biggest stars, is a likely
entry for the International-Sanc
tioned Atlanta 500. Ford Motor
Company’s Director of Racing,
Jacque Passino said recently,
“I expect both Foyt and last
year’s Indy winner Bobby Un
ser will be driving Fords in
the Atlanta 500.” Foyt will pro
bably drive a Ford prepared
by Jack Bowsher while Unser
is expected to drive a Ford pre
pared by master mechanic
Smokey Yunick.
Dodge fans believe Charger
driver Bobby Allison actually
outran Ford’s David Pearson in
the recent Carolina 500 stock
car race and are hoping Alli
son proves it in the March 30
Atlanta 500 at Atlanta Interna
tional Raceway. Dodge fans felt
Allison was faster more consis
tently since he made three pit

stops under the green flag while
Pearson was making only one stop
under the green. Allison was
only a lap behind Pearson at the
end and Dodge fans figure the two
additional green flag stops made
more than that much difference.
“That race is over,” says Alli
son, the current AIR track re
cord holder, “but I’m really
looking forward to running at At
lanta.”
The March 30 Atlanta 500 will
be the first outing for Ford’s
new 429 cubic inch engines. “I
don’t see why they need a new
one, “quipped a Dodge driver
doing all right with what they’ve
got.” Ford has swept all three
major races in 1969, Riverside,
Daytona and North Carolina Mo
tor Speedway.
Defending Atlanta 500 champ
ion Cale Yarborough will be try
ing to equal Fred Lorenzen’s
record of 3 consecutive victor
ies in the $107,000 event. Lo
renzen, the all-time ford super
star, won the 1963-64-65 races.
Yarborough won the 1967-68 At
lanta 500. The Timmonsville,
S. C. native is NASCAR’S all
time leading money winner with
$136,000 he took home in 1968.
