Hampton M. Smith
Hampton M. Smith, of Deer
field Estates, Covington, passed
away at his residence, Tuesday,
March 25, after a lingering Ill
ness. He was a native of Rock
Hill, South Carolina and 49 years
old.
Funeral services will be held
today (Thursday), March 27, at
3:00 P. M., at the Chapel of
Harwell Funeral Home. Officiat
ing at the service will be Rev.
Thomas J. White, pastor of First
Presbyterian Church. Interment
will be held In Covington City
Cemetery with J. C. Harwell and
Son Funeral Home In charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Smith was a member of the
Covington First Presbyterian
Church. He was also a veteran
of World War H, a member of
the American Chemical Society,
the Oil Chemists of America,
Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity, and
the Moose Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Hampton M. Smith; sons, Wade
Smith, Duane Smith, Rodney Smi
th, and daughter, Melinda Smith,
aU of Covington; two brothers,
Henry Smith, Rock HIH, South
Carolina; Raymond Smith, Shre
veport, Louisiana; sisters, Mrs.
W. E. Walker, Mrs. J. Y. Jones,
both of Rock Hill, South Caro
lina; Mrs. Murray Starr, Char
lotte, North Carolina; Mrs. R.
M. Sealy, Columbia, South Caro
lian; and Mrs. S. B. Hand, Au
gusta.
Joseph P. Hannon
Joseph P. Hannon of Route 1,
Oxford, passed away at his home
on Monday, March 24, at the age
of 52. He was a native of Sum
ter County and self-employed as
a carpenter.
Funeral services were conduc
ted at the Chapel of Caldwell and
Cowan Funeral Home on Tues
day afternoon, March 25, with
Rev. James West, pastor of the
Walnut Grove Baptist Church, and
Rev. Tillman Singleton officiat
ing. Interment was in Center
Hill Cemetery in Walton County
with Caldwell and Cowan Fun
eral Home In charge of arrange
ments. Serving as pallbearers
were William Kimble, Kenneth
McCart, Hoke Dial, Grover Car
ter, Bobby Burton and Earnie
Shellnut.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Mary Boss Hannon, Logan
ville, sons, J. A. Hannon, Lo
ganville; Ronnie F. Hannon, Gray
son; Roger D. Hannon, Logan
ville; two daughters, Mrs. Jua
nita McGee, Oxford; Mrs. Caro

Funeral services for D. B.
(Dave) Bohannon of Conyers St
reet, Covington, were held
Tuesday afternoon, March 25, at
the Chapel of Harwell Funeral
Home with Rev. E. Owen Kel
lum, Jr., pastor of the First
Methodist Church, and Rev. Tho
mas J. White, pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Mr. Bohannon was a native of
Newton County and was 71 years
old at the time of his death in
an Atlanta hospital on Monday,
March 24. He had been a pat
ient in the hospital for the past
three weeks following a ling
ering illness. He was a mem
ber of the First Methodist
Church and Covington Elks Lodge.
A retired contractor, he served
for a number of years as Build
ing Inspector for the City of Cov
ington.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Laverne Epps Bohannon, Coving
ton; one daughter, Mrs. Davelyn
Hellwig and three grandchildren
of Bedminister, New Jersey; one
brother, R. Heard Bohannon,
Charlotte, North Carolina and two
sisters, Mrs. Annie Sanders and
Mrs. Charles E. Wilson, both of
Atlanta.
Mrs. Ben L. Kitchens
Mrs. Ben L. (Hattie T.) Kit
chens of Emory Street, Coving
ton, passed away in a private
hospital on Tuesday, March 25,
at the age of 81. She was a
native of Jasper County and a
member of the First Methodist
Church.
Funeral services will be held
at the First Methodist Church
at 2 p.m. today (Thursday), Of
ficiating at the service will be
Rev. E. Owen Kellum, Jr., pas
tor of the church, and Rev. S. R.
Jones, pastor of Bethel Baptist
Church of Stone Mountain. Inter
ment will be in Covington City
Cemtery with Caldwell and
Cowan Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements.
Surviving are three sons, B. A.
Kitchens, Atlanta; L. L. Kitchens,
Loganville; Sidney L. Kitchens,
Conyers; two daughters, Mrs. J.
P. Hammond, Covington; Mrs.
R. L. Fletcher, Conyers; two bro
thers, E. L. Chaffin, Monticello;
R. R. Chaffin, Atlanta; 22 grand
children and 17 great-grandchild
ren.

Dr. Charles L. King, a native
of Newton County, pastor emeri
tus of the First Presbyterian
church of Houstin, Texas, will
be the guest evangelist during the
Easter Revival at the Alexander
Memorial Presbyterian Church
which is located at 1706 Candler
Road in Decatur.
The meeting will begin on Palm
Sunday morning and ■will be con
cluded on Easter Sunday morning.
The meeting will continue each
evening during that weekat7;3O
with the exception of Saturday
evening. Special music will be
provided and a nursery will be
opened for small children.
Dr. King was Moderator of the
General Assembly of the Presby
terian Church in the United States
in 1944. He is a graduate of
Davidson College and Union Theo
logical Seminary in Richmond,
Virginia.

Club To
Aid Scouts
The Piedmont C. B. Radio
Club met March 13th at Cov
ington City Hall. The meet
ing was called to order by Presi
dent Barney Johnson. Robert Few
read the minutes of the Febru
ary 27th meeting.
Robert Few read a letter the
Club had received from the Boy
Scouts of Newton County for their
assistance during the Boy Scout
Clean-Up Drive.
Each member Is to give one
book of trading stamps to help
get gifts for the Jamboree, so
members be sure to attend the
meeting on March 27th and bring
your stamps.
The meeting was adjourned af
ter which refreshmentswere

"Crusade Os Americas”
Revival At High Point
The Crusade Os The Americas
Revival will be held at the High
Point Baptist Church March 30 -
April 6 with Rev. Charles Goe
as evangelist.
Rev. Goe is a native of Hanni
bal, Missouri. He graduated from
William Jewel College and Sou
thwestern Theological seminary.
After graduating from seminary,
he felt called of God to go into
the Navy Chaplaincy. While serv
ing with Marines on Taiwan, in
the Pacific, he was wounded and
received the Purple Heart. The
book "Is War Hell?’’ was written
describing his experience during
World War H.
He was called to the Sunday
School Board in 1946 in the Va
cation Bible School Department.
He stayed only a short time
feeling the call of God to Cali
fornia where he served as Di
rector of Youth for the Southern
California Baptist Convention and
then was pastor of the First
Baptist Church of Fernando for
five years.
During the campaign for the
purchase of property for the At
lanta Baptist College, he was
chairman of publicity and direct
ed the Radio, TV and News cover
age.
Mr. Goe has preached in Re
vivals in Georgia, Florida, North
Carolina, Missouri, California,
Texas and participated in the
simultaneous revivals in the Re
public of Panama in February
1966, In May of this year he
will travel to Hawaii to preach
in a simultaneous revival.
In 1963, along with his family,
Mr. Goe attended the Baptist
Youth World Converence in Bei
rut, Lebanon. He has traveled
twice recently to the Holy Land
and many parts of Israel and
Europe with Evangelistic Tours.
Presently, Rev. Goe is serv
ing as Executive Promotional Di
rector of the Life of Christ
Foundation.
On Sunday night, the service
will begin at 7:00 o’clock, but
the remainder of the week it
will begin at 7:30. A nursery
will be provided for babies two
years old and under. The mem
bership of High Point extends a
cordial invitation to everyone to
attend these services. The theme
for the week will be Christ, The
Only Hope. Tuesday night will be
Youth Night.

Deacon of the week is Dwight
Hodges, having made a public
profession of his faith in the
Lord. He was baptized April
16, 1961 at the age of 15. Since
that time he has been very ac
tive in many phases of the church
work. Dwight is one of our
newest deacons and is also serv
ing as President of the Brother
hood.

Jehovah's Witnesses
Plan April Meeting
John E. Baugher, presiding
minister of the Covington con
gregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses
announced plans for a special
meeting scheduled for April 11th
through 13th. The Robert L.
Osborne High School, 2451 Favor
Road, S. W., Marietta, will be
the scene of the witnesses next
circuit assembly.
Mr. Baugher, who resides in
Covington, stated that the theme
of the program is “Make Wise
Use of the Remaining Time.”
The program will include morn
ing, afternoon and evening servi
ces devoted to Bible education
and practical suggestions for the
ministry of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Principal speakers for the pro
gram will be Joseph Saia, dis
trict minister and Ray Cooper,
circuit minister, both from
Brooklyn, New York. They have
been traveling ministers for the
Watchtower Society for many
years.
Mr. Baugher and the Covington
congregation of Jehovah’s Wit
nesses invite all their friends
and neighbors to attend with
them. A large delegation is ex
pected to represent the local con
gregation at the meeting.

NOTICE
In a recent meeting the Newton
County Commissioners passed a
resolution that delinquent taxes
bear interest at 7% from December
20th of the year in which they
were due, as provided by law.
Also in the near future a notice
will be sent to taxpayers advising
them that their past due taxes,
plus interest at 7% per annum,
must be paid within thirty days
from date of notice or a fi fa will
be issued and turned over to the
Sheriff for Collection.
